Last night AA nearly had matched this - there's was $165 base fare plus taxes for $205 all-in. But I only found one date in January and February for this.

Good find. I costed it as an overnight in Feb and it came back the same $165.

Tried adding SNA-LAX legs, which often graft on for just taxes, but it came back $263

Has anyone booked the flight 8024 from and to IAD on the same morning?

United Airlines Flight UA8024 on an Embraer ERJ-145 (jet) in coach class
(operated by UNITED EXPRESS/TRANS STATES)
Departs Washington, DC (IAD) Fri, Feb 9 8:16a 1 hr 24 min
Arrives Providence, RI (PVD) 9:40a

Departs Providence, RI (PVD) Fri, Feb 9 10:08a 1 hr 32 min
Arrives Washington, DC (IAD) 11:40a

It looks like it's the same plane, so the brief "illegal" connection wouldn't carry any risk. Dot-bomb won't let me book it, but Orbtiz will.

Thanks!

It is the same plane, I just did this MR yesterday 1/7/07 on UA7382. So UA8024 are the same plane. Though UA7382 had over a 30 minute layover, I wonder if you called Bomb support if they could book it for you, or at least hold it for you.

I was looking to do the same MR again on 2/10/07 maybe I'll see you.^

I've got a flex Friday so I'm going to start with a red-eye Thursday night and wrap it up Friday afternoon (if all goes according to plan).

Here's my high-wire itinerary. Any weather farts on the east coast, and I'm probably hosed on my return sequence:

Thursday, February 8, 2007
United Airlines 50
Depart: 10:20pm Los Angeles International (LAX)
Arrive: 5:56am Washington Dulles Intl (IAD)

Friday, February 9, 2007
United Airlines 8024
Operated by: UNITED EXPRESS/TRANS STATES
Depart: 8:16am Washington Dulles Intl (IAD)
Arrive: 9:40am Providence T.F.Green Airport (PVD)

United Airlines 8024
Operated by: UNITED EXPRESS/TRANS STATES
Depart: 10:08am Providence T.F.Green Airport (PVD)
Arrive: 11:40am Washington Dulles Intl (IAD)

United Airlines 217
Depart: 12:20pm Washington Dulles Intl (IAD)
Arrive: 3:12pm San Francisco International (SFO)

United Airlines 927
Depart: 4:02pm San Francisco International (SFO)
Arrive: 5:25pm Los Angeles International (LAX)

United Airlines 6154
Operated by: UNITED EXPRESS/SKYWEST
Depart: 6:07pm Los Angeles International (LAX)
Arrive: 6:42pm Santa Ana John Wayne (SNA)

6707 EQM, $210 all in.

Had to book on Orbitz as neither dot-bomb tech support nor phone reservatations would waive the $15 phone fee to override the PVD turnaround "illegal" connection.

Returned to SNA so the wife doesn't have to hoof it up to LAX during rush hour to retrieve me.

PVD-LAX rather than LAX-PVD

Aren't domestic fares supposed to be the same whether going A-B or B-A. Being an East Coast type, I looked for an RT between LAX and PVD starting from PVD (PVD-LAX-PVD) instead of from LAX (PVD-LAX-PVD). Using same dates, the former keeps pricing out for me at about 2.5x the latter?!

Am I wrong to expect A-B-A and B-A-B to cost the same? Is this huge difference in fares going PVD-LAX-PVD and going LAX-PVD-LAX exceptional or not so remarkable?

I'm glad I noticed this fare...I'm going to do this and stay over at a friend's house in Boston, making this into a sort of MR (for the 3 RTs deal) but also getting in some visiting by returning the next night.

Yay!

Although my friend, when wondering why on earth I'd come to visit for just the night asked, I felt compelled to explain my motives and he thinks I'm crazy But at least he has a couch with my name on it and will show me around Boston the next day.

I'm using it as an excuse not to visit the inlaws and to pick up another hotel night or two.

People just roll their eyes when I say it's an overnight to LA and back.

They I say it's that or go with the wife to the inlaws.

They fully understand that part.

Fri Feb 2 out, Sat Feb 3 back.

Generally YES with some exceptions. (ex-Hawaii fares. for instance)

I guess you are encountering availability issue. Technically, it is impossible to take same available flights from LAX to PVD as well as from PVD to LAX on the same day, right? Some fares might have DAY/TIME restrictions and these sometimes make the reverse itinerary impossible (not referring to this one).

I've got it booked for basically a one day trip, leave 6am from LAX, return a few minutes past midnight back into LAX.

Could you elaborate on such exceptions? As a consequence, might it be cheaper to nest one mileage run within another rather than do two repeat RTs (A to HNL, then on another PNR HNL-A-HNL, and finally HNL-A, as opposed to A-HNL-A and then A-HNL-A a second time)? But the exceptions are clearly exceptions, since on domestic tickets at least one can expect A-B-A to fare out the same as B-A-B?

I'm not sure what I am encountering when looking for PVD-LAX-PVD for the same fare as can find with LAX-PVD-LAX. The "flexible dates" search shows me the the latter (LAX-PVD-LAX) can indeed by had for $165, but the same approach only brings up very much higher PVD-LAX-PVD ones. I suppose there could be something buried in the terms that are so hard for me to translate, but it seems a bit improbable since generally these transcons are easier to arrange starting from the East Coast than from the West Coast, IME.

Since when did the calendar start going backward?
I almost got a heart attack since I have an MR between 02/09 and 02/11.
Btw, nice itinerary! ^

adding more segments

Anyway, come on, $165 is a great rate for a trans con! I might fly this to PVD and then take a bus to Boston

Great Deal
$165 all in RT (without any voucher)
Via IAD = 2288 + 500 miles = 2788 (one way)
1P+ bonus = 2788 (one way)
Online booking bonus = 500
total RDM gained (not including 5/10/25k) = 11652 = 1.42 cpm ^
total EQM = 5578 = 2.96 cpm ^

Thanks OP
I booked this trip too, but added another segment for $169
