Keep watching for deals at:
http://www.digitalcity.com/raleigh/travel/deals.adp
(I note AA is running RDU-SAN for $154. Perhaps UA will match..)
Also check out:
http://dps1.travelocity.com/dreamMap...p_arp_name=RDU
I'm not seeing any great domestic opportunities on UA. There are some great AA fares to the West Coast, though!
Lufthansa has London for $348. United has it for $418. United has Paris and Munich for $389.
I haven't pulled up the particular fare rules, but some creative routing domestically could bump up the miles to a respectable level.
If you do a run to Asia, don't forget to sign up for the 2500 mile Asia bonus:
http://www.ual.com/site/primary/0,10...52,00.html#AIS
Also remember to sign up for the Japan bonus:
http://www.ual.com/site/primary/0,10...2,00.html#1130

I don't know if you have time to go to Europe, but RDU to ATL on United is around $150 for Same Day return (used 9/25 for example). Just over 2000 base miles thru IAD. If you can get thru ORD, even better. Couple of these would get you to the 5000.

Gleff, Thanks!
As many times as I think to check the bonuses page on ual.com, I somehow always seem to forget.
You just reminded me to get the 2500 bonus for my trip to sin in Nov, and at the same time I saw the double miles bonus that I can use between ord and sna later this month.
Thanks again,
Sean

I forget the bonuses, too -- so I've started to make a habit of just registering all of them EVEN THE ONES I'M SURE I'LL NEVER USE.
Who knows when I'll get strangely re-routed?
Might as well sign up. Just takes a moment...
Cheers,
Gleff

Todd,
Thanks for the info!
As a newly-minted ATL-based 1P, the RDU day trip sounds like a great idea @ $ 148+ (Orbitz). Looking at the available flights and the ACC pigskin sked, two Tobacco Road teams are in action on 9/22. Though the Duke-Northwestern game won't work since it starts @ 6P, and the last conx is 7:30P. However, FSU-UNC play in Chapel Hill @ 3:30P...stay for first half, then back to RDU. Based upon the first two UNC games, the game might be over by halftime. (Apologies to all blue-heaveners).
As for coming from RDU, unfortunately Georgia Tech has scheduled an off week on the 22nd (between FSU and Clemson). But there's always something to do in Atlanta!!
