For high segment runs that are often comparatively cheap, look at ONT (or SNA)-LAX-SFO-SMF, or SAN-LAX-SFO-SMF. The FT master of this is Crankyusi and a search in this or the UA forum would pull up several threads re.

How's this?
SA 21 JUL UA 5029 CLD-LAX 2:51p-3:30p
SA 21 JUL UA 2660 LAX-PHX 4:40p-6:00p
SA 21 JUL UA 233 PHX-TUS 7:55p-8:40p
SU 22 JUL UA 234 TUS-PHX 7:30a-8:18a
SU 22 JUL UA 2604 PHX-LAX 9:50a-11:15a
SU 22 JUL UA 5024 LAX-CLD 1:51p-2:36p
$123.50 including taxes; fare basis VE7A1N (7-day advance purchase, 1-day minimum, no Saturday stay required). 6 segments, 3000 status miles, 4.12¢/status mile. With a 100% 1P/1K Premier bonus and a 1000 mile online booking bonus, that works out to a very respectable 1.76¢/mile.
Above fare quote was from United's web site using arbitrary dates for pricing purposes. You should be able to reserve with UC 3.0 (which hopefully still triggers some bonus miles) and ticket at a CTO. Both LAX and PHX have Red Carpet Clubs, if that matters to you.

Was going to also suggest a low cost California-to-Tucson, six segment trip, as I have experienced before, but mine was SAN-LAX-PHX-TUS and return.

good point there.
I do this once in a while
ONT-LAX-LAS-LAX-ONT
but mostly just
SNA/ONT-LAX-OAK-LAX-ONT/SNA
I definately will do the
ONT-LAX-SFO-SMF-SFO-LAX-ONT
being that i am with LH M&M this nets 6000+ 1500 status bonus = 7500 status miles for around $120 without long flights....
Easy seg's or miles
