EWR-HKG for next January cancelled
Apparently, UA has cancelled EWR-HKG of my CLT-HKG trip. They add another stop at ORD and fly HKG from SFO; I.e., from CLT-EWR-HKG to CLT-ORD-SFO-HKG. Return trip remains unchanged for now.

My opinions are based on what Carrie Lam has publicly said. It's hard to be optimistic when she specifically said Hong Kong is favoring resuming normality with the Mainland.

IMO:
Hong Kong will delay re-opening to the world for as long as they can due to their fear of resurgence of "democratic ideas" as witnessed prior to Covid-19. For Hong Kong, Covid-19 health restrictions squashed the Hong Kong demonstrations. For Carrie Lam, Covid-19 was a blessing in disguise. The language used now is all about normalising relations, business and connections with the mainland.
For the expat community and international business, reducing restrictions will be secondary. Hong Kong will not be the same again.
My guess is that Hong Kong will open up at the same pace and level as the mainland. There is no reason to think that Beijing will "allow" HKG to have more freedoms than the mainland when it comes to re-opening to the world. HKG will re-open when Beijing does, probably not before. Anything other would go against Beijings desire to treat HKG the same as all Chinese cities.

Air transit/transfer services at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) have resumed gradually. From 15 June 2020, passengers can use HKIA for transit/transfer on flights operated by different airlines under the same air ticket, provided that the passengers have checked through at the origin port with their boarding passes printed and baggage tagged-through to the final destination.
