Found some good prices to JNB from mid october to mid march....

Thanks for the great fare find. Unfortunately, a quick check (and logic) suggests LH K fare, which doesn't earn on UA and thus makes this not a MR.

fra-jnb is avail codeshare on south african, where K does earn. if it's purchased as K on a UA or LH ticket, does that mean it will be in SAA's K or not necessarily?

With the 24-hour free refund option you should be able to book, confirm and then figure out what the operating carrier fare class is. At least in theory.
