3 1/2 choices:

1. Rental car. 'Nuff said. Parking very available downtown (albeit at a cost)
2. Metro Cabs at the airport (cabs)
3. Metro Cars at the airport (airport limos)
1/2 SMART bus from DTW to downtown (takes 1 1/2 hours, very much a meander around downriver, way impractical for what you've got in mind...only practical on mid-day journeys during the week)

Only comment is that if you're very late (past about 12:30 am) there have been reports of no cabs, no dispatchers, no anything. issue is that the female dispatcher does not have a ladies' restroom at the location (wherever it is) and has to go next door (!) to the fire house to go to the bathroom (!)....was just this week on the Freep blog otherwise I wouldn't have believed it.

Street parking still not recommended downtown at night, at least not yet.

Detroit has some pretty scummy cabs and my on-the-road friends not from the area always gripe at me because most still do not have credit card machines.

Metro Cars are very nice. Just a bit expensive, but nice.

Wirelessly posted (Blackberry 8830: Opera/9.50 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/4.0.9751/298; U; en))

Metro Cars is a great option but a rental car may be a better option if you need to get around the city or Metro area. Some parking lots have security. The lot at Henry Ford hospital did at least so I had no problem parking there overnight. Parking in hotel lots and the like should not be a problem but you might want to avoid parking on the street at night as the poster above advised.
