Looptopia Tonight. Anybody going?

Get Loopy!
Prep for all-night bash Looptopia with our hour-by-hour guide

Sure, you've seen some ho-hum signs on the "L" touting this Looptopia thing. But what is it? And what's all the fuss about? Well, start thinking big--really big.

Looptopia is America's first "white night"-style bash, modeled after all-night spectacles in Paris (Nuit Blanche), Rome (La Notte Bianca), Madrid (La Noche en Blanco) and other cultural capitals around the world. The party kicks off at 5 p.m. and rages past dawn with more than 125 performances at 35 Loop venues. Looptopia's producers, the Chicago Loop Alliance, expect more than 100,000 people to attend the juiced-up block bash; nearly all events, exhibits and performances are free.

Very interesting -- Its about time the "second city" gets a first.
During my years in Chicago I tried to avoid the large "fests".
I usually had music rehearsals the night of the July 3rd fireworks (Mrs JJ would always go), I tried to go to "Taste of Chicago" and the art fairs on off hours -- and even was invited to play in a Jazz combo on one of the boats for "Venitian Night". I'll see what comments I can find in the Sunday Trib.
UNITED959: If you go, please give us a report.

I'm probably going to walk over there for a bit -- just to see what it's about.

I generally hate the other fests (Taste, Grant Park madness festivals, etc.), but this sounds interesting.

I never went -- it was rather cool outside, and after grilling my pork chops at home with an open bottle of wine, I preferred to just post on FT all night. I did look out the window a few times and could hear a roar as well as noticeably more light shining off the buildings in the loop...(as compared to a regular Friday night).

Looptopia draws twice as many partygoers as expected

Downtown Chicagos first attempt at an all-night party drew twice as many people as expected, organizers said.
An estimated 200,000 people packed stores, theaters, restaurants and bars during Looptopia, which kicked off at 5 p.m. Friday at various locations throughout the Loop and ended at 8 a.m. Saturday.
We underestimated the crowd size a bit, said Ty Tabing, executive director of the Chicago Loop Alliance, organizers for the first-time event that cost $1 million to host.
