Trader Vic's Chicago

After 48 years Trader Vic’s at the Palmer House closed on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2005.

While certainly not the height of culinary achievement, it was fun. I always enjoyed the kitschy drinks, some did pack a wallop!

Edited to add: Trader Vic's has returned to Chicago, see post #8 below & beyond.

I hear you! We had a Trader Vic's in SF that closed some yrs ago that we enjoyed too. I have recently noticed that another Trader Vic's is in SF but have not got to it yet. Wondering if it will be the same?!

Wow! Somehow I'll get over it!

My last time there was, I think, in 1982!

Thanks Willie!

The night before you were at Mr. Kelly's, right? Or was that 1972!

I stopped in there for a few drinks last Thursday. Very very similar to the old spot in all ways. It seemed like maybe the mai tai's weren't as potent as I remember? Or maybe I've just gotten more absorbent?

the latter

I went last night with 5 other people who were in from out of town.

Drink menu is even more confusing than it used to be, seemed to be many more choices.

We also dined:

Starters:
Cosmo Tidbits for Two (spareribs, crab Rangoon crispy prawns, char siu pork)
spareribs were the best out of the 4 above, the others ehh
Malayan Chicken Skewers (Lemongrass and kaffir lime marinade with our own chutney)
I enjoyed this
Some other tables around us had the following starter and it looked & smelled good:
Beef Cho-Cho
Seared steak with soy sake sauce finished on your own flaming hibachi

Entrees:
The people I was with are conservative diners so they all went with the Wasabi Crusted Filet Mignon
Hawaiian spiced fries, Choy sum and oyster mushrooms
It looked ok but in my opinion they really missed out.
I chose the Mauna Kea Lamb (Sliced Lamb, apricots, pine nuts, shiso and watercress) which was excellent, I really enjoyed it.

based on my delicious dish alone I will go back.

Agreed on the mind-boggling variety of drinks -- and I might be a lightweight, but the "small" drinks were still plenty sufficient. The cho-cho was okay, although it's hard to argue when you're the cook.

The space feels larger, although perhaps that's because it's much more open (the old basement space was anything but). There's also less clutter, since a lot of the smaller items at the Palmer House were five-finger-discounted.
