Had lunch at Cemitas Puebla the other day.

I enjoyed the al pastor cemita, one of the best sandwiches I've enjoyed for sure !!

I was going to bring home the tacos Arabes (that's Arab tacos) but 2 of the three didn't quite make the ride home.

This place was featured on the Best of Chicago a while back. I keep forgetting about it. I sure sounded good.

Has anyone been to De Cero - same owner as Grange Hall, which I love?

It's been a few years, but De Cero is great.

Personally, my favorite taqueria in Chicago is Big Star. I know it's not "authentic" - at least, it's not a place anybody from Mexico goes. But the tacos are amazingly good (pork belly!). The beer and whiskey are plentiful. You just have to deal with an infestation of hipsters and the fact that the place is perpetually crowded.

I hope to try Big Star sometime, I have a hard time putting up w/hipsters, they are not the vibe or people I want to be around.

For all my kvetching about hipsters, Big Star isn't that bad. The crowded nature of the place is my main turnoff. But even then, it's not so bad. And the tacos are worth it.

Oh! Get the guacamole too!! It's amazing.

We finally made it back to the Mexico Restaurant yesterday. I concur with Willie's review. ^ ^

After seeing they had Birria de Chivo (spicy goat stew) on the menu, I ordered the Birria tacos. These came exactly as Willie's Tacos al Pastor, wrapped in kitchen paper with rice and beans. All I added was a little fresh lime juice and was in heaven.

Mexican beers for $3.25 .... what's not to like!

Very reasonable prices, good food and we left full.

oh yeah I love goat, can't believe I haven't tried those yet. I must say I've been enjoying a new favorite at Mexico Restaurant, lengue (tongue) on homemade gordita w/choice of roja or verde sauce (both are excellent but I give the nod to the roja). These slices of tongue are sliced 1/4" thick and are AMAZINGLY tender/flavorful and the dense homemade gordita, EXCELLENT !!

I clicked on this thread because I was curious to find out what a Taqueria is. Wow. Let me just say this needs to happen in Canada! Especially in southeastern Ontario! I miss the Mexican/El Salvadoran food of the Midwest. Surely Chicagoans should appreciate even the most mediocre of establishments if for nachos they do not go out to the pub (no taquerias up north) to find dry crumbly chips covered in tomato paste and manufacture-grated cheese, and green olives. Baked. Bleagh.

Sounds like a business opportunity. The margins on that stuff should be pretty good.

Yolo Mexican Eatery - Skokie

I tried a new (new for me) place late in December.

http://www.yolomexicaneatery.com/

http://www.yelp.com/biz/yolo-mexican-eatery-skokie

Very good food, BYOB. They have several home made mole sauces. A small restaurant (8 tables?) on a side street in downtown Skokie.

This is not your typical mom and pop taqueria. More upscale.

We had chicken tacos with black mole and marinated steak tacos for appetizers. Both were excellent.

For entres, we had pompano in cilantro sauce, filet in a creamy mushroom arbol pepper sauce, and pork in a tamarind mole sauce. Again all were very good.

All the dishes were obviously made from scratch with fresh high quality ingredients. Servings are somewhat on the smaller side.

The bill for three including dessert came to just over $100 including tip.

I would definitely go again.

Taqueria El Asadero is in an area w/o many good taquerias, the asada (skirt steak, charcoal grilled) is DELICIOUS here. (at too many places the asada is dry or w/o flavor, not at Taqueria El Asadero)

Taqueria El Asadero
2213 W Montrose Ave
Chicago, IL 60618

Another option

Carmela's al pastor is quite good

1206 W Lawrence Ave
Chicago, IL 60640
Phone number (773) 275-5321

And, even though it is a full restaurant Nuevo Leon is still amazing and inexpensive.

Nuevo Leon shut down because of health code violations.

I'm just going to leave this here:

This place is one of those places that has survived on undeserving reviews. When I moved to the city ten years ago, I thought it was amazing because I didn't know any better. Now? I cannot even get over the greasy floors, much less the roach infestation.
