For a great steak place that has been around in Chicago for decades, try Gene and Georgetti's http://www.diningchicago.com/restaur...ti/index2.html
rude waitstaff, but great steaks.
Gibson's is very good
For a chain I really like Smith and Wolensky's steakhouse. Nice views on the Chicago river and delicious sides.
Tried the NY transplant the Palm in the Swisshotel. Was not thrilled. Another miss IMO, is the Chicago Chop house.
I'm not really a fan of Italian food, but if I'm going to eat Italian, I usually head down to some restaurant on 18th street

For downtown Italian, I like either Rosebuds on Rush (not quite as good as Rosebuds on Taylor but close. HUGE portions!), and Tucci Bennuch (inside of the 900 N. Michigan mall. Great Baked Spaghetti.) There is also Italian Village and Scuzzi's but I think they are both overrated.

Another vote for Rosebud's for Italian.. and I also prefer the one on Taylor!
For steak.. Gibson's and Smith and Wollensky's are both fantastic. If you have good weather (not to hot) - opt for outside dining at S&W... river is right there.
I am also partial to Maggianno's - LOVE the Angel hair Pomodoro! .. and the chicken marsala.. and the veal vesuvio..
I am hungry now...

For steaks I highly reccomend the Capitol Grille just off Michigan on St. Clair. I have tried most of the steak houses in Chicago, and the Capitol Grille is by far the best.
If you want to try a great Italian place that is a little off the beaten path, try Bella Notte around 1700 West Grand. Great food at great prices, and a lot of ambience. Much better for a quiet dinner than some of the better known Italian places.
Reservations recomended at both places.
