Downtown Chicago Deli?

I will be in downtown Chicago awaiting an Amtrak departure for the better part of a weekeday.

Are there any downtown area deli restaurants on the par of Max and Bennie's in Northbrook that one could dine at using the L or buses and not venture too far from the downtown area?

Thanks!

Manny's, on South Jefferson certainly fits the bill:

The #157 bus passes right next to Union Station, and will take you to Taylor/Clinton which is only a block or two from Manny's. (the return is on Canal, a block further east). On a nice day this is about a 15 minute walk, which I would do, but parts of the walk take you past fairly isolated areas.

"milepig" is being diplomatic. Many of us would use the adjective "crappy." Or worse.

Almost next door to Manny's is Binny's Liquors, a fabulous store if you want to pick up some unusual imbibables. They have something like 1500 different beers, for example. Lots of rare spirits, etc.

If you are in the downtown Loop area, try Ada's Famous Deli at 14 S. Wabash Avenue.

Steve's Deli, Chicago

"Downtown", I like Steve's Deli ("Jewish-style", not completely Kosher) at 354 West Hubbard St. in the "River North" neighborhood (a 1/2 block from either the East Bank Club or the Merchandise Mart, and it's easy to reach by public transportation or on foot (of course, "on foot" depending where your starting point is!).

And virtually all of those people would be suburbanites who are scared to leave their manicured lawn prisons.

There's nothing bad about that walk; I do it frequently.

My vote goes to Eleven City Diner at 1112 S. Wabash south of the Loop and a block from Michigan Av as well as the El. It might lack the "atmosphere" of Manny's but the food is pretty good and quite authentic(I am a Jewish guy and a deli goer from way back). It is owned by a young guy who traveled the country going to various delicatessans and incorporated the best of what he experienced into this restaurant. IMHO definitely worth a try.

I disagree. Almost every time we ate there, we got to see Brad(the owner) melting down or treating his staff, including his parents, like dirt. Really poor behavior.

The food is OK, but it got to the point that I would only go because Manny's isn't open on Sunday.

Correct. The area is more empty than dangerous, unless you're afraid of fire academy cadets.

You're not the only one. Yelp is teeming with reviews indicating that the owner loudly mistreats employees and customers on a regular basis. Pass.
