Gold Class Cinemas

Currently two locations: Barrington and Bolingbrook

Friends treated Mrs. Sweet Willie & I to a movie last night at the Bolingbrook location of Gold Class Cinemas (located in The Promenade)

Large bar area with a surprisingly tasty menu, wide range of drinks, decent service (a bit slow on the night we went)

During the film, it was very non-intrusive service yet prompt (you have a call button at your seat), while we watched the movie seated on huge, comfortable, powered recliners.

It was a lot of fun^

Karen and I have been to the one in Barrington a few times and definitely enjoy it.

The free glass of Champers for using a Visa Signature card is a nice plus

Has anybody been yet? The website seems a little gimpy as of now. I tried a dummy booking for Christmas afternoon, and it only offered me Sherlock Holmes, with no indication as the whether the other movies are "sold out", "not available for pre-booking", etc., just not listed yet?

I also can't find out anything about the bar/food, and I'm not even sure the lounge is open yet.

I just happened to notice an ad in the paper the other day. Thought about seeing Avatar there as it's in 3D and it seems like it would probably be a comfortable place to sit for three hours.

The owner of Gioco, Opera, et al., is involved so maybe there will be some decent food options.

After I posted I found some early reviews in YELP. The general opinion seems to be: love the cinema, VIP room is great, food has a long way to go.

We almost always take in a movie on Christmas afternoon, and since this is a 10 minute walk at most I think we'll probably check it out.

Yeah, he has a small ad in the movie section each day lately - doesn't list the movies, just what it is, location, etc. Doesn't mention him by name today.

We went Friday night to see Up in the Air.

The VIP seats are nice: wide, 2 seats can become a loveseat by moving the arm up, and between each set of 2, there's a table for drinks/food. It's 21+ only, and $17.50 per ticket.

The lounge part is underwhelming. Food choices are 4 pizzas, 4 paninis, a few desserts, a salumi/cheese plate, and bacon popcorn. Full bar, horrible beer selection, and all beer is in bottles.

The only downside to the VIP section is that servers will walk in during the movie to deliver food/drinks, and they tended to forget that they were in a theater, and had conversations with their customers.

I'd pay to sit up there again, but I'd get my food from the normal concession stand downstairs, or stop at Target first and smuggle in my sour patch kids.

According to the signs in the new Block 37 Mall, Muvico will be "Opening Soon."

OT - I was in the mall today. Only a few stores are open, but it's beautiful. What used to be the hideous pedway, is the bottom floor of the mall and it is an amazing transformation - and there is a Beard Papa's CREAM PUFF shop down there! The line was too long today, or I would have stopped in. I've never heard of this place - has anyone else?

After a bit of a problem reserving tickets - the 25th wasn't loaded into Fandango yet, and then was only partially loaded - I had a very pleasant exchange of phone calls and emails from the ICON staff who got right on the problem with Fandango. I was very impressed that the staff jumped right on the problem, given that most theaters seem to be managed by kids who still have zits.

We're seeing Sherlock Holmes in the VIP room on Christmas Afternoon. I'll send in a report.

Went tonight to see Sherlock Holmes. Terrible movie, great theater.

The good:

Great seats in the VIP section
Free parking - we were going to walk, but it was snowy and very windy.
DRINKS in the theater - wahoo.
Great sound
Loved the seats.
We saw zero servers in the VIP section, maybe they got the message.

The bad:

Very odd route from parking to theater. Who designed this place? You need to go back outside to get from the garage to the theater? Even worse, there seem to be no steps, so after a fully booked show it should be a total disaster waiting for the elevator to parking.
Bar totally disorganized and poorly laid out. Bartenders need MUCH more training.
The video made me dizzy. This is a digital theater, and I found the video very choppy. Sherlock Holmes had many fast-paced scenes, and the picture couldn't keep up. Worse than my home TV.
They seem very inefficient. I had booked online, and printed out my ticket. They then scanned the ticket and printed new tickets from that - what was wrong with the one I printed online? Then like 12 people checked it at various places. Someone needs to sit down and figure this out.
