Large Indian Grocer/Warehouse
Anyone direct me to a large Indian Grocery in the DC/Balt metro area? sort of like an H-Mart of India. there seem to be a large number of large Hispanic grocers in the area, and a number of modest sized Indian Grocers, but would like to find a supermarket type place.

A couple we've frequented are:
Madina Market
374 Elden St, Herndon, VA - (703) 904-7000
Indo Pak Spices -
422 Elden St, Herndon, VA - (703) 709-5842
Madina is probably the largest we've seen locally. Not quite an H-Mart, but a great selection.

There are several Indian stores next to each other in Langley Park (Prince Georges County, inside the capital betway). The area is called "chandani Chowk" and includes clothing and jewelery stores.

Madina is large and has a meat department. has an excellent selection of anything my wife could think of to buy. the produce is lousy. go to an H-Mart for produce. 20 or 30 different flours. every dried bean/pea product one could imagine. most every spice and seed that anyone would ever want. did not see any "meals in a jar" outstanding selection of meals in a bag/box. extremely extensive selection of chutneys, jams and preserves from every possible country. the jams and preserves almost all were made using sugar, not corn sweetener.
indo pak is about 1/4th the size,no meat, no produce. everything else that Madina had, crammed and stacked on the shelves, and significantly better prices. among other things, purchased a jar of Barberry preserves, made in Iran.
these stores are well worth the trip(ours is over an hour)

Where are you located. Those two stores are certainly adequate, but not large or exceptional in any way (IMO). There are several similar stores in Springfield, if that's closer...
