If you're interested in cheap bus service, definitely get the Chinatown bus. It will drop you off in downtown Manhattan close to many subway lines. Roundtrip ticket should be around $25.

Do a Google search for "chinatown bus" and you'll have a ton of options presented to you.

i don't know about bus, but you can take rail all the way to manhattan, but you will need to transfer a couple times.
from PHL, take the septa regional rail (the R1 train) to 30th street station in philadelphia. from there, get on the R7 rail line to trenton, nj.
at trenton, you need to buy a NJ Transit rail ticket to go to penn station in manhattan.
at penn station, you'll have access to the 1,2,3,a,c and e subway lines.

If you're into cheap and don't mind slow, this is what I'd suggest also. You can actually buy the combined SEPTA/NJT ticket at 30th St. Station, so no need to run downstairs in Trenton. The trains usually connect on the same platform, IIRC.

I don't know about Philadelphia, but the bus stop in New York's Chinatown (under the Manhattan Bridge just off East Broadway) is NOT particularly close to any subways.

A better alternative would be to use one of Greyhound's eSavers fares ($12 O/W, $20 R/T). That bus takes you to Port Authority Bus Terminal where you can easily connect to the Times Square subway station (A/C/E/1/2/3/7/S/N/R/Q/W trains).

Of course, you still have to get from PHL to the Philadelphia Greyhound station - I'm sure others here can advise you on the best way to do that.

There are also Chinatown buses that stop at Penn Station--the OP will just have to do a little research into which ones. In Philadelphia, I think most of the buses run from near Reading Market and the Convention Center (sorry if I've got the names wrong).

Doing the Septa and NJ Transit trains can be confusing for many. As noted Greyhound has gotten much cheaper, is more convenient and I would trust the buses are in better/safer condition than the others. Amtrak is faster, more direct and often $50 OW with discounts.

Here's a link to information about the P2P Circulator bus, which runs from 30th Street Station/Philadelphia, to Penn Station/Manhattan:

Thank you for all the replies. I'm sure I'll find what I need with this help. I know Manhattan, so no problem there. Just wondering how many of these buses actually start at PHL airport - or whether I need to go downtown Philly first. I have plenty of time but I hate too many transfers.

Only local Septa buses serve PHL. You must get into the city for other buses and the Septa R1 train is the fastest and best way.

Must you take a bus? You can take a SEPTA train from 30th St Station in Philly to Trenton. Then buy a NJ Transit train ticket right there to Penn Station in NYC. You board the train at the same station; it couldn't be easier. I prefer the train to the bus and at Penn Station, you'll be sandwiched between the 7th Ave and 8th Ave subway lines.

Not a public transportation expert but I would think that the PHL train via Septa to the NE Corridor (NJ Transit) train would drop you right off at Penn Station in NYC.
