DC area beaches
Anyone have a recommendation for a DC area beach? Don't really want to make the 3-4 hour drive to Ocean City or Virginia Beach. Really just a patch of sand and salt water will do. Preferably there is some kind of tiki bar nearby. I'm actually coming from Silver Spring if that makes a difference.
Thanks!

Sandy Point State Park has a fairly decent beach but no tiki bar. I think there are a few public beaches in the Edgewater area as well. Chesapeake Beach or North Beach might fit the bill. Haven't been to either in years so not sure what they are like now. I know there has been alot of developemnt in those areas.

That's a huge reason I left College Park 10 years ago; I couldn't stand that there is no easy way to get to the Atlantic. The only option you really have are Chesapeake Bay beaches and the only one I've been to is Sandy Point. I didn't like it. The best beaches I found were in Delaware....nice soft sand, zero sales tax, and you don't get the gruesome scene which is Ocean City.

DC isn't exactly on the coast as I'm sure you know since you live in Silver Spring.

I believe that is exactly what he asked for:

No wonder people keep asking me why I moved away from Savannah. Thanks for all the suggestions!

Did you say tiki bar? This one is right by Calvert Cliffs State park, which also has a beach.

If you wanted to drive that far south though, I would go to Point Lookout instead. Much nicer

There are a few beaches on the Potomac, below the 301(harry nice) bridge. Swimming was allowed, and popular at the tidal basin and graveley point until swimming was banned in DC in 1957. the water off graveley point is DC.
I live 4 miles south of the DC line. We have a beach on the potomac. We check water quality and do water activities. The water in the potomac is cleaner than the water in the cheseapeak.
after major rainstorms There are sewerage dumps , and all contact with the Potomac should be avoided.
\The hudson, by the way, has been cleaned to the point that sturgeon have returned, and beaches are being planned in the NYC area.

Thanks to all who gave advice. Went to North Beach, MD, yesterday just up the street from Chesapeake Beach. Cozy beach, murky water, had to pay $6/person entry fee. Not used to paying for beach access, but it was only 30 miles outside DC with absolutely no traffic. Guess I can't complain. Glad the weather cooperated!

For both Bay & Potomac, try Point Lookout
