Parking suggestions for BWI

I need to park at BWI for five days. It looks relatively cheap, compared to other airport locations, only $8-$10/day for on-airport parking. The off-airport places seems to be about the same prices, maybe a bit less with a coupon. So is it worth it to park on-airport? What are the shuttles like? From my experience at some other airports, the off-airport is not only cheaper, but you end up waiting less time for the shuttle. Is the BWI daily garage walkable to the terminals?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I've been quite happy with PreFlight - especially the door-to-door shuttles, but I park there enough to actually make use of their frequent parking bonus. Be sure to use the coupon, though.

The only thing walkable is the hourly garage - but I think they're still having their $20/day 'sale', so this may be reasonable enough to do. Haven't used remote parking in ages - if you're using official airport parking, I would probably spend an extra $2/day and go for the covered spaces in the daily garage. That's because the remote lots are huge, so you end up spending a good chunk of time riding the bus around the lot and/or walking to one of the pickup/dropoff points.

Check Airport Parking Reservations. They are listing Pre-Flight at $8.25 a day and Park 'n Go at $10.90. Plus their $4 service fee.

I too use Preflight for BWI! Their rates are better than Park 'n Go and I got sick of Park 'n Go being full and them having to vallet my car. Problem was not the vallet aspect but they always took forever to figure out which space they parked the car in when I returned. I also like Preflights FF parking plan.

Econopark Express

If you are looking for inexpensive parking at BWI, check out http://www.econoparkexpress.com/ The listed rate is $4.75 a day, and there is an internet coupon for another dollar off a day.

I don't have any experience with them, and they are fairly new to the parking game at BWI. I see their shuttles running all of the time. If there is a negative about them, their location is fairly remote -- over by the BWI employee lot.

If you do happen to try them out, let us know what you think. Good luck and happy travels!

I'll add another vote for PreFlight. Excellent service and good rates. When you get out of your car, the shuttle is there. Usually only about a 5 minute wait between shuttles at the airport. Much better than my experiences with BWI parking shuttles. You can print out a coupon at www.longtermparking.com.

Looks like PreFlight is a winner, I'll go with them. Thanks for all the quick responses.

It looks like econoparkexpress and preflight lots are almost next to each other. I'm hope to be taking a flight ot 2 out of BWI soon. I'll have to check them out and decide on the better one.

For some unknown reason, I parked in the "Green" lot at BWI last trip.

Waited 15 min for the inbound shuttle. 32 min for the return. The driver was talking to a passenger, and did not call my stop, so I had to walk back from 11 to 10.

It is amazing how bad things can get when they are all handled with political patonridge.

I always use Airport Fast Park at BWI. They're $7 + 8.5% tax per day with Internet coupon (airportfastpark.com, click on Baltimore) and just like the more expensive Preflight, have a shuttle that follows you to your space immediately when you enter the lot, and picks you up right at your car. The return is just as painless; the shuttles run every 5 minutes or so and drop you off at your car. No endless waits and circling like in the airport-owned lots.

There are two Fast Park lots: Red and Blue, both charging the same rate. The Red lot is closer to the terminal but I prefer the Blue lot as it has easier on/off access to the BW Parkway.

How much is the Amtrak garage these days? It's been a couple years now, but I stumbled upon it by accident one time when the airport's own shuttle parking was full. I think it was before the big airport garage was finished. Anyway, the garage at the Amtrak station had plenty of room and was only $6/day at the time. It's probably not as big of a secret now, so maybe it fills up and/or costs more. Not having any luck finding the info, tho.

In poking around I did find this:

http://bwiairport.com/images/banner/BWI_DPcouponS1.jpg

$2 off/day for parking at the daily garage. Since it's reguarly $10, that should make it $8.

Linked right from their parking info page http://www.bwiairport.com/directions.../parking_info/ so should be legit and printable to use until August 31 as it says.

You could always free park at one of the lightrail lines, and ride it to BWI.

Get there a lot faster than waiting for the bus at the green lot.

Amtrak used to be my favorite place to park when it was $6 per day. Close to airport, covered parking and shuttle service to airport was good. Coming back, depending on time of day could be good or bad. However, they raised their rates to $9 per day and I haven't parked there since. It might even be more now.

I switched to Preflight and have been very pleased with their service. As stated myself and others, BWI shuttle service sucks.

How safe are the neighborhoods on the light rail line to BWI? Is parking provided at the rail stations or on-street only?

For those of us who are really on a budget, there's also free street parking right near the airport, on the shoulder of Elkridge Landing Road. You can walk to the daily garage from here and take the free shuttle to the terminal. Don't even think about trying this in winter, though, as I've seen mounds of snow piled up alongside Elkridge Landing Road after storms. It might take days for you to dig your car out.
