Two days in Virginia - Suggestions

Hello,

I will have two free days in Virginia (Thursday and Friday) in June. I can arrive early Thursday morning either to the Washington area or to Richmond and rent a car. What are your suggestions for what to do in those two days? Some ideas that come to mind: Williamsburg, Blue Ridge Parkway, and some historical sights. I will get a tourist guide as well.

After that I will spend a week at the University of Virginia, so I will likely see Charlottesville and Monticello during that week.

I will also have another free day (Saturday), but I was thinking of staying closer to Washington and checking out the Udvar-Hazy Center or Alexandria, VA.

Thanks in advance,
Alex

Don't bother with the Blue Ridge Parkway until you get to Charlottesville. If you only have two full days, I'd use them both in either Williamsburg area or DC area. Williamsburg can be done in that time. Two days in DC is not enough for more than the monuments and a few cursory museum views.

Thanks for the suggestions, syzygy8... I've been to Washington, DC before several times, so I am interested in Virginia mainly.

If I had to choose between Udvar-Hazy or Alexandria, I would most definitely pick U-H (but then, I like airplanes ). It is a fabulous museum.

I second the recommendation to visit Williamsburg. You would probably need two days there. Jamestown would be an interesting stop for a couple of hours, if you like historical sights/sites, and it is in the vicinity of Williamsburg.

Speaking as a Virginian (born and raised), I would second the Williamsburg suggestion. It's a really cool place for people interested in historical sites. The admission rates for the "full" package are a little steep (comparable to an amusement park), but there is so much to do for free and cheap and great shopping too. Be sure to check their website http://www.history.org/ for the schedule of events before your trip, because there is always something going on. And if you get bored of history, Busch Gardens and Water Country are right around the corner.
