Speaking as a Virginian (born and raised), I would second the Williamsburg suggestion. It's a really cool place for people interested in historical sites. The admission rates for the "full" package are a little steep (comparable to an amusement park), but there is so much to do for free and cheap and great shopping too. Be sure to check their website
http://www.history.org/ for the schedule of events before your trip, because there is always something going on. And if you get bored of history, Busch Gardens and Water Country are right around the corner.
