Help getting home from IAD
Help! Trying to find a way home to DFW.
I am arriving at IAD on AF at 4:10pm on Aug 26.
I had originally booked a direct IAD-DFW departing at 7pm. Flight was cancelled and they put me on a 5:30pm flight. I decided this resulted in a transfer time that was too short... And rebooked a Delta flight IAD-ATL-DFW departing at 7:50pm. The IAD-ATL flight was cancelled, and the new IAD-ATL flight departs at 5pm. Again, this flight won't work and I decided to cancel it
There are now no good options.... Which one of these do you think is the best chance of success? I'm flying in the front of the plane on arrival, will have GE and TSA pre check, and will be carrying on, no checked bags.
1) 5:30pm IAD-DFW flight. Leaving me with a 60-70 min intentional to domestic transfer
2) 8:10pm IAD-CLT-DFW flight, with only 37 min transfer in CLT
3) 7:30pm DCA-DFW, with 3 hr transfer to get from IAD to DCA, and through security
What are they chances they add a flight that will work for me? Probably none right? So, I have to choose one of the 3 options above.
I'm leaving towards #2. Any delays for my incoming flights is okay, and just have to make the 37min transfer at CLT work. Ask flight attendant to help get me off the plane first, and ask gate agent to notify CLT-DFW agent that I'm on my way? Option 2 get me home at the latest time though. I looked up ontime history for IAD-CLT, and this seems like it's late a lot... So, maybe not.
Now, I'm thinking the 7:30pm DCA-DFW is better. There's a 8:45pm DCA-DAL on Southwest that might be better too
Thanks

I don't want to tell you what to do, but if you have GE, no bags and are at the front of the plane then you should get through immigration pretty quickly (You have to deal with the people movers, but actual time from when you arrive at immigration would probably be 5-10 minutes)

1) This is in August so things could change again.
2) Front of plane and no checked bags for me would mean I track the record of AF flight. Many int'l flights (except TK!) arrive early because schedules are padded a bit (not as familiar with AF or arriving from overseas to IAD, though).
3) If it seems semi-likely the AF flight will arrive on time, (and esp if IAD uses the GE app, which for me was even faster than regular GE at ORD), I would choose the 5:30. If you miss it, while it's not an auto rebook since not the same ticket, honestly, I would spend the night at IAD and take whatever AA rebooked me on direct (Flat Tire Rule, so they will still rebook you). Don't run to CLT and get stuck there, or spend money heading to DCA.
I am not risk averse when arriving back from a trip, so take my advice with that caveat.

the subway system runs silver line st airport to Roslyn thrn blue to DCA. Its 45 min ride Dulles- Roslyn, transfer time 5-15 min, 15-20 min to DCA. About 80 min travel time
washington flyer taxi is thr only licensed taxi company you can take therr is no wait. They have a dedicated internal highway that take it inside the beltway. After that point traffic can be unpredictable.
I live a mile south of DCA and have done cabs home with late arriving flights (10pm or late arriving) where metro is not an option but I also have no traffic issues so it takes about 35 min to get home. It will take about the same time to get to a drop off point with traffic picking up people. At evening Monday rush hour you might have to give it about an hour
from DCA you do have the southwest DCA-DAL option with an 845pm direct flight. Southwest in Dulles gates are not an option.
you can book a 7pm or later connection flight.
security at Dulles shouldnt be a problem then with under 10 min wait. About 15-20 min to get to your gate.
At DCA a couple years ago they redesigned security. Coming from metro you enter the airport next to security check points, if you need to check a bag you go up stairs. Thus is for terminal 2 airlines. Southwest is terminal 1 so you need about a 7-10 min walk then security check. Therr is no difference in cab time because its the same path thrn split to go to T1 vs T2.
security isnt too bad then. The north side is American uses C-E gates, jet blue has a part of C, delta, United, alaska use B gates, A gates are southwest and frontier. If you go metro.you walk the same direction as the train for B gates or southwest. American is going against the train direction.

Thanks for the input guys.
I've booked the 5:30pm IAD-DFW, with the 8:45pm DCA-DAL as back up.
If my AF flight comes in on time, we will try to get though GE and security quickly. If we're delayed coming in and can't make the 5:30pm then I'm going with a taxi to DCA.

I'd say you'll have a good chance to make the IAD connection, but if you don't - depending on how delayed you are - I wouldn't give up on the DCA-DFW option as a backup (which AA should put you on at no cost). DCA is nothing like IAD. With boarding pass in hand, PreCheck, and no checked bags, you can typically get from the front door thru security and to your gate in 15 minutes or less. Have the cab drop you off at the express passenger drop-off (follow the purple signs) which bypass the ticket counters and enter right into the metro station next to the security area (PreCheck is first).
