DCA Terminal 1 Reconstruction
It looks like construction will start in the 2024ish timeframe, MWAA will reconstruct Terminal 1 with new gates. Obviously, there are no current renderings, but I thought I'd put this on your radar. I am pretty surprised given the fact it was just renovated in 2014. Thoughts?

Interesting... the document says "9-gate Banjo replacement". So they're talking about essentially demolishing the current gates and replacing them? I would love to see the original 1941 terminal (currently the "Exhibit Hall") reconfigured with a few gates. Then maybe extend that area to the south with additional gates (similar to the UA gates just to the north)? Will be interesting to follow this. Thanks for posting.

The original terminal isn't getting new gates - historic preservation rules getting in the way. However, the south hangar complex (currently housing the CG, Signature FOB, TSA equipment testing lab, and the aviation school) are slotted for lots of changes. At one point there were serious plans to convert them into MWAA HQ offices when the exiting HQ was demolished to make way for the new T-2 E gates pier. New MWAA HQ will now be located across from the parking garages where the current public safety and engineering departments buildings are (the old USG testing laboratory) in combination with the new on-property hotel.
Still, it would be great to better integrate the original terminal. It's very cool - especially when you look at the old photos and realize what it once was. But no one (except us aviation geeks) seems to know anything about it.

So the banjo is getting demolished? And the gates will be reconstructed into the south hanger complex and stretch to the southwest down to where the Signature FBO is now? If so, this is very interesting and seems like a definite improvement... Any links you can share?

Slides for the October board meeting are up: https://www.mwaa.com/sites/mwaa.com/...s%20Update.pdf
Lots of useful information here. There is also a concept of the new Terminal 1 (it looks just like Concourse B). It is still in the NEPA face, so I don't expect the project to start until the end of this decade. Any thoughts?

Looks like the T1 planning may be moving further along, with the historical portion getting redeveloped starting in a couple years.

Good catch! I guess I had missed that in previous presentations; that does look like a 1:1 banjo replacement, if I count 9 gates at each.
For those interested, it is Slide #12.
