NPR reporting this morning that Mexico is now saying that the worst is over (for now), and they're contemplating allowing businesses, etc to open back up in MEX.

Could be true, could just be Mexico trying to get back on its feet and persuade the world that everything is OK (regardless if it's true or not).

Trying to decide whether it'll be a smart move for us to go to CUN (as planned) in 2.5 weeks, or whether to cancel. This whole thing could be over by then!

I think you will be fine, but do keep reading the WHO announcements.

Everything getting back to normal, even in Mexico City, schools, museums etc. Bit of a storm in a teacup if you ask me, and just an excuse to knock Mexico. No cases here in San Miguel. One caveat: the virus could mutate and come back with a vengeance when colder weather hits in the northern hemisphere in the fall, but by then there should be a vaccine.

Outside of MEX, H1N1 is a dead issue. Granted the Mexican authorities have taken extraordinary precautions to protect visitors (and the Mexican public) from new cases. But having come back last Saturday from a 1 week visit to Isla Mujeres via CUN, I can give you some info.

Arriving at CUN on 5/2, Immigration and Custom personnel were not wearing masks. But before being able to leave Terminal 3, everyone had their temp taken (via a non-invasive scanner held to the forehead) to detect those with fevers. From then on, during the whole week on Isla Mujeres (and in transit there and back) I saw only a handful of folks wearing a mask...and most of those were tourists.

On the Isla, since most restaurants are openair (and not affected by the government ban on large crowds in enclosed spaces), most were open, though fairly empty due to the flu scare. I had whole beaches at times to myself. How unfair that this flu scare is hurting so many of the locals who live on the tourist trade.

Returning to the US 5/9, before I could get to the check-in counter, I had to go through a Ministry of Health queue where I answered a questionnaire on flu symptoms, got my temp taken again, and was scrutinized by health professionals. When passed, I checked into my flight.

Quite frankly I felt safer in Mexico (where there have been 3 confirmed cases in Quintana Roo) than back home in BOS (where there are 110 cases confirmed in MA). I say, go with confidence.

When I saw the subject of the post, I didn't know if it was about the swine flu or the drug cartel violence. It looks like the flu has gone down but the border issues still remain.
