Using Marriott Cheques

The T&Cs for cheques state "Marriott Cheques may be used for all publicly listed and available room rates and packages, but cannot be used for convention, travel industry, tour, advance purchase, catering, or group room rates"

If I am staying on an award stay, can I use cheques for my incidental charges?

I have, and there was not an issue, but they were used for incidental charges that were signed to my room. I do not think you can use them (for example) to make a purchase in a gift shop, pay your restaurant bill, etc.

I have found that if the gift shop or restaurant is operated by Marriott and you charge the purchase to your room, you can use the cheque upon checkout to pay for your purchases.

That is correct - but it is not limited to (just) gift shop or restaurant - ANY charge that is billed to your room - ie - not paid for at the time of purchase - can be settled with a Marriot cheque.

Another question

Let say I get a $1000 Cheque which is a paper certificate. If I use only part at a hotel how does the rest get used or do I need to use all of it in one place?

thanks

Good Morning,

The paper gift cheques to my knowledge are not issued in $1000 increments. If you purchased $1000 it would come in increments of $50 or $100. However, a gift card can be purchased for $1000.

If you are presenting a paper gift cheque for payment, there will be no change given if you do not use all of the cheque.

With a gift card, you will be able to use any amount and the card will keep track of the balance, like a debit card.

You will not receive any Marriott Rewards point credit when purchasing a gift card, however when used it is just cash tender. You would receive Marriott Rewards credit for the stay or just for the incidentals.

Regards,

Kate

True, but . . .

If you buy the Marriott gift card using your Marriott Rewards VISA card, the purchase will be considered a Marriott purchase and you'll get the 5 Marriott Rewards points per dollar (from the credit card company) for that purchase.

I had a recent two night stay in New York that I paid for with gift cheque. Do I earn points and do I get credit for nights stated?

Short of going to a Marriott hotel, is there a site where I can check to see if my Marriott Cheques are authentic? I bought a few on eBay and have 45 days to dispute the sale through PayPal.

http://gifts.marriott.com lets you check gift *cards*, but not cheques.

You could call customer service, and ask them to check your serial number, indicating that it has been lying around for awhile and want to check if they are still valid, but be careful - if they find out you got them on ebay they can void them.

The cheques have some good anti fraud technology on them. Including micro printing, a hologram, and small micro fibers embedded in the paper. I think there is also wax type dots that should peel off with your fingernail. If it has all of these, it is good to say they are authentic and would be honored with few problems.

Has anyone had any problems using these in London or Paris?
