It seems as if the hotels may have found a NEW way to get around the "regular room available". Yesterday, they were regular awards, with regular rooms.

Today...they are "free full irish breakfast" package!
Same thing was Grosvenor House and Grosvenor Square for many days in June and July. There are no "regular rooms" available because they now have a breakfast package attached to them!

Oh, and I dashed out side to check, and sure enough, the sky was still up there.
I've been trying to use rewards at the Rome Grand Flora from 3/31 - 4/3. Nothing has changed today - rooms available for sale, no rewards available. Oh well - looks like I'll be staying somewhere else.

Today I've just book 5 nights stay during Oct 21-26 at Courtyard Tokyo Ginza with 120,000 MR points. It has been decreased for 100,000 MR points from the stay-anytime award (I checked before Jan 15).

IIRC, the Rome Flora is one of two or three hotels that are exempt from most requirements of Marriott Rewards. Don't use them as a benchmark.

I've been watching Hawaii opportunities prior to Jan 15th... (mainly Xmas week)
Waikoloa didn't have anything except stay anytime offered. Now it's opened at a higher point offering (I'm ok with that.. I've got a hopper certificate that I'll use if we go).
but the thing that surprises me is Marriott in Kauai standard room. Yesterday it was available as a stay anytime (a bit high for us) otherwise all other rooms had an upgrade attached for a plan ahead (either $$ or extra points. Presently there's no availability at Kauai but there is if we wanted to book a revenue ressie. Luckily I've got back up plans.
Will be interesting to watch.

Waikiki

Before 1/15 it was coming up as a "pointsaver" ressie for almost all dates in '09 (including Xmas-NE). Now it's not.
Glad I made a ressie yesterday.. now to make sure the dates work.

Well... this is not one of your high volume tourist destinations, but I had been watching the Ren in Cleveland for next weekend for several months. For a long time NADA, recently "Stay Anytime" Today.... Standard reward. Grabbed it and cancelled the Ritz for the same weekend. (Ritz reviews for CLE are so so and the "points" diff didn't seem worth it!)

I'm doing a search for Washington DC for the inauguration. There is no difference in availability now than there was an hour ago.
The new policy will not apply to extraordinary events like the upcoming inauguration. Most properties have sold out all their rooms (paid and award).

BigLar,

They may have been exempt under the old system, not so under the new one. I just checked them for some dates in September, and although they have a standard Queen room available under a Corpoate rate, as well as some packages, they don't offer it for rewards. This is not some special event, either.

This stinks and MC should address this issue ASAP.

Wrong, they are exempt under the new system.

Marriott Concierge confirmed this a while back. It is also well documented (see below) on Marrirott.com at this link: http://www.marriott.com/rewards/terms/usetrms.mi#hotel

The following properties do not fully participate in No Blackout Dates at this time:
- Rome Marriott Grand Hotel Flora, Rome, Italy
- Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa
- Wailea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, Hawaii

Ok so I tried St Thomas again at 7:30 pm for multiple dates in March and early April that were available 3 days ago for stay anytime..

Leasure rates, advance purchase rates and B&B rates available but NO reward availability of any kind!

Hard to believe this isn't fraudulent activity at the hotel level if not systematic fraud.
