I have been upgraded to a room with a different bed type, but it was mentioned at check-in that the upgraded room had a different bed type. At some hotels when I inquire about an upgrade, I have been told that my room type is not available in an upgraded room. When the bed type has been different it is always when I was requesting a King, and the room had 2 queens/doubles/twins. I have never been offered a single bed room when I requested 2 beds.
When I am traveling alone, bed type doesn't matter. When I am traveling with non-SO friend, then 2 queens/doubles/twins does matter. Also when traveling with SO then King bed matters, but alas that is not currently the case.
Generaly I have found that when I request 2 beds, the chances of an upgrade to anything other than the CL is not going to happen. Suites almost always have a King bed, so the only way that upgrade will happen, if they do it is if my bed preference is 1 King.
