Overbooked Experience

Hello all,

I just settled into a strip-mall motel for the night even though I had a reservation at a Marriott property located 10 minutes away. When I called to confirm my reservation earlier this evening, I was told that the hotel had overbooked themselves and they were going to divert me to another hotel for the night. The supervisor said that they would take care of all lodging and transportation costs for the night.. He also said that they would be giving me extra Marriott points for compensation and to talk to the manager about the situation upon my arrival tomorrow afternoon. My question is this.. What do you think is the most appropriate compensation to expect? Also, will I still get my night's credit and points from whatever I would be paying at the Marriott property tonight? Though this experience has been somewhat of a pain, the manager has thus far taken care of me quite well.

Thanks!

If you have any elite status, you should get $200, 2 free nights good anywhere with no capacity constraints, and a comparable room elsewhere for a FS property. If it is not a FS property, you are owed $100 and a room elsewhere (with platinum members getting 2 room certificates like the ones above as well). In both cases, you should get the points and night credit you would have earned if you had stayed at the Marriott.

Let us know how it turns out. Also, I'll be curiuos if you had to bring up the T&C or if the manager offered the appropriate benefits to you without your requesting them.

For those with Platinum, Gold and Silver Membership:

The Ultimate Reservation Guarantee: To be eligible, your Marriott Rewards membership number and a valid credit card number must be part of your reservation. If unable to honor reservation, the hotel will pay for your accommodations that night at a nearby comparable hotel and compensate the member for the inconvenience. Compensation varies by lodging brand (see below):
  • At Marriott Hotels & Resorts; Renaissance Hotels & Resorts; Marriott Conference Centers; Marriott Vacation Club International; and Horizons by Marriott Vacation Club: Alternative accommodations, plus $200 and 2 free room certificates.
  • At Courtyard by Marriott; Fairfield Inn by Marriott, SpringHill Suites by Marriott; Residence Inn by Marriott; and TownePlace Suites by Marriott: Alternative accommodations, plus $100. (Platinum members also receive 2 free room certificates.)

Smile The Outcome...

Well, we're finally at the Springhill Suites! After attending a daylong event, we came back to the orginal hotel to check in. I presented myself at the front desk and was quickly handed an envelope. The manager was very apologetic and said that this should never have happened to an elite member (I'm currently a Silver). She said that in the envelope was a little something to help ease the inconvienience. Once we got to our room, I opened up the envelope and found a certificate for a free night stay at a Springhill Suites and $100 cash. I was shocked!

Though the last 24 hours were somewhat hectic and confusing, I thought that the hotel staff did a wonderful job on fixing the problem. They paid for last night's lodging, all transportation involved with getting to and from the hotel, and included the compensation noted in previous replies. My only worry now is that I will not receive the night credit and points for last night.. My reservation online now only has us staying from Thursday-Saturday (instead of starting on Wednesday). Should I worry or just wait for the issue to be resolved?

Also, thank you to all who helped answer my question on the board.. The first thing I thought of after getting "walked" was to post my story here!

Glad they accomodated you correctly. I'm not sure why you were shocked, the hotel did what they were supposed to.

It's good to know the rules and not let the hotels get away with not following through on their obligations.
