Guarantee vs Upgrade
Last night I checked into a Fairfield Inn & Suites. Since I am Platinum, I asked if there was an upgrade and there was. At this point, my welcome gift is in the other room. Since they had some cookies(fresh) in the breakfest area, I said that I would be satisfied with the water and call it even.
Normally the welcome gift is in the room that they have reserved for you. How far would you pursue the gift if they gave an upgrade and you did not get it?
Would the upgrade become a deciding point in pushing it to the guarantee if you told them and you still did not get the gift?
Inquiring minds are curious.

The Fairfield/Courtyard welcome gift consists of water and a small bag of cookies. If I was upgraded, I wouldn't pursue it. At a full-service, I'd just ask for the points.

As previouly stated at FF Inn's, the welcome gift isnt' much and so I almost never worry about it. I don't normally stay at FF Inn's, but in San Angelo, TX, this was the ONLY Marriott in town. They did have a gift there waiting for me, but I also took the room that was reserved for me. If I ask for an upgrade and get it, then I normally would forgo the gift.

Arrival gift
I have been upgraded (or occasionally change rooms as my corp travel agent doesn't always include my first floor room preference). I typically stay at FF or CY properties where the gift is just water and a small snack (either cookies or chips) and the front desk is almost always more than happy to grab a gift for you. Its usually right in the office behind the desk. Your right, its probably not a big deal, but it never hurts to ask.
