We always tip if they help us out with restaurants, sights, etc... We received wonderful service from the staff at the JW Marriott Denver as well as the Marriott Waterfront Seattle and we tipped both places.

Just wanted to say that this is a good thread. Most of this stuff never even crossed my mind. I can't say that I have ever tipped in the lounge, but then again, I don't frequent the lounge as much as some others. The most I do is grab a plate of fruit at breakfast and head back to my room or pop in during the day for a bottle of water.

Really no need to tip under those circumstances.

I've tipped the concierge when they have provided a special service for me. I also pick up my plates myself and take them to the kitchen or trays that are set out. Special services include making a dinner reservation for me, or looking after me in some unusual way. I suspect I end up tipping about 40% of the time.

I concur with the above statements...My experiences as well...

I would agree. Often, we pop in for a water or soda on the way into/out of the hotel. Don't tip then. However, when the attendant spends 30 minutes talking to us about where we might want to go the next day and takes our plates without even asking, or bringing extra napkins, etc.. we do tip.

Last week a lady came into the lounge and asked the Concierge to make her a breakfast to go. She just stood there while the attendant toasted and buttered her bread, gathered eggs and sausage and fruit. Got coffee to go, plates, napkins, etc.. and then put it all in a bag. I have NO idea why she couldn't do this herself, but she did not tip. I thought it was above and beyond what the staff needed to do, but she did it with a smile.
