How do I get around this mess? Close, use a different card and hope that the 100K offer is available in 60 days?

This all seems crazy.
I'm in the same boat and was told the same thing about having to wait 60 days. I'm not sure why Chase cares or not if the closure has hit my credit. I have multiple chase cards and have had 1-3 for the last ~5 years. Once I hit my anniversary on the current card (around 6/10), I'm waiting a week and then will cancel. At that point I'll anticipate seeing some reports of other people who have closed and then applied again.

My wife is currently LTG and working on getting to LTP before August. She is currently sitting at 760+ nights but is 212k points short of the magic 2mm. So of course we looked at canceling the old card she's had for 5+ years and getting the new card. She called Chase and got a csr who told her the bonus points were only a once in a lifetime event and she could not get the 100k bonus. I then called and was told by a csr that my wife would eligible for the 100k bonus but not until 30 days after she canceled the old card. I was then transferred to a credit specialist who told me the same story. So on 4/28 the old card was cancelled. On 5/16 my wife called to see about getting the new card and was told she had to either apply on line or at a Chase Bank. The csr also looked at the old card account and said she needed to wait until 30 days had passed since the closing or she would not get the 100k. The csr also said she would recommend waiting until 6/3 to apply just to be safe. And so the struggle continues.

Mistake to upgrade before old card’s anniversary date

I upgraded my card just days before my old card hits anniversary. It turns out to be a huge mistake. I received the new card, but free night and elite nights didn’t post. Customer Service told me that my clock was now reset for the new card and I won’t have a free night until a year later. But it my new annual fee will still be charged in 60 days.

Marriott - Chase Bank - Shorted on promised points

Earlier this month, I received an e-mail advising me of the advantages of upgrading my existing Chase Bank - Marriott credit card (that I had many years) to Chase Bank's new Marriott card.

Among other things, the e-mail notice said to click on a highlighted link to determine how many Marriott points I would receive if I accepted the upgrade offer to the new card. The number of points given to upgrade varied from 10,000 - 50,000.

I clicked on the link and I answered the questions asked. After several seconds a message appeared on my monitor that said I would receive 20,000 Marriott points if I upgrade. I accepted the offer and agreed to the new terms including the modest increase in the annual fee. All seemed good to me.

Then, my billing statement arrived a few days ago. I was given 10,000 points, not 20,000.

Thinking it was a minor clerical error, I called Chase and asked about the discrepancy.

The agent said that there is no record of my being told that I would get 20,000 and that all customers automatically get 10,000. Even though I stated that 20,000 points appeared on my screen, the agent said that is just the way it is and that nothing can be done to correct the error.

Despite my otherwise good track record with Chase Bank, I want to warn others who upgrade to the new Chase Marriott card to verify that the promised points are accurate when the points are posted to your statement.

I would send a secure message through the Chase website, you might need to follow up and persist a bit but they usually fix stuff like this

Chase's secure messaging has always been a better option than calling.

Read the main thread about cancel/upgrading the card.

Anyone who got a bonus over 10K will see it post in two parts. The first 10K will appear linked to your first transaction (you can see it in "rewards details" in the app or website). Any remaining bonus will appear on the statement, not attached to a line item. I sent a message to customer service asking for the rest of my bonus, only to find that it was there if I had just waited for the statement to generate. So, don't do what I did. I'm guessing it's set up this way in order to support the variable bonus levels for everyone -- they threw a "10K bonus on first transaction" reward into the system and then handled everything else separately.

On the statement, points from earlier in the month appear as "Points transferred in" -- presumably, transferred from the Premier account to the Premier Plus account -- and then there's a category for 6x points on Marriott and 2x on everything else (everything post-conversion, that is). And then the bonus(es).

My anniversary date isn't listed on my statement.

same here. I got my elite night and my Cat 5 a few months ago. My only issue is, I cannot think of what I want to use the Cat 5 on before I cancel.

I know there likely is not enough data points out there, but can we book our Cat 5 for a date much later, cancel the card, get the new card, and still retain our Cat 5 booking?

I received my Cat5 coupon in Early April and was billed my annual fee shortly thereafter. Canceled my card 5/4 after realizing it would be better to apply for new card vs. taking the 10K point retention offer, planning to reapply after the 60 days for the new card (or sooner if reports suggest I don't have to wait). Cat5 cert hasn't been pulled from my account, still applied to an upcoming stay.

Mdosu (and Jra3,) once you receive your Cat. 5 e-cert, it's safe! You don't even need to make a dummy booking now! I've cancelled & refused to pay the AF on several Chase cards over the years. No problems ever: I always kept & successfully used my Anniv. Cert. !

thanks for the confirmation. I am going to call and cancel the card today based on this data point. Frankly, even if they changed the rules, it's worth it to me to get the 100k and lose the Cat 5. This year, I cannot find a time and place to use the Cat 5 booking, at least not within this tight window that we may have to cancel, wait and then apply for the new card. This 100k is worth a lot to me in redemption value. It's worth at least $1000 to me in its redemption/transfer value. This Cat 5 cert is worth no more than $150.

Just an update, I asked the Chase rep about my Cat 5 reward. She said it'll be retained even with card cancellation. It'll expire on the posted date.

Yes, I had assumed the cert was safe. One issue is whether the pickings of hotels that you can use it for goes up or down after Aug 1. Is there a definite view of that?

Does the anniversary night eligibility gets reset if we take the upgrade offer? My annual free night gets posted in October. If I upgrade the card now, Do I get the free night (35K one) in October or does it mean I lose that night (25K one) in October and will be eligible for free night in next May?
