Earning Points on Redemption Upgrade?

Just stayed for a week using the 7 night cert form the travel package, and upgraded our room at a rate of $190 a night. This was a residence inn property.

However, I did not receive any points for the extra charge. When I called in, they said you do not receive any points for redemption stays, even if you spent money on it, and I argued that it doesn't specify that in the terms of service.

Customer service discussed with supervisor and insisted that was that case, but couldn't find where it says on the terms of service. They issued a one time courtesy points, which did not include the additional 25% bonus points. At that point, after 45 min on the phone, I didn't want to argue anymore.

Anyways, who's correct here? Are they making up ........, or did I just argue my way to some free points?

Thanks!

I think the onus was on you to show where in the T&C it states that you should get points, not the other way around. I'd say you got some points that you really didn't earn, but isn't that what FlyerTalk is all about?

One would like to think that ANY money spent at a hotel would be subject to earning points, so good job getting them.

Of course Marriott is the King of carve outs, exclusions and inconsistencies whether its elite breakfast or points on incidentals from brand to brand that one needs a PHD to decipher & remember. They are good at burying the all exclusions in the fine print so the onerous should be on them to prove it.

Just curious what RI was worth $190 per night for the extra bedroom? Hawaii?

It states specifically that I would get 5 points per dollar spent on rooms, which I argued. At that point, I think it's on them to show on the T&C that it doesn't apply to redemption rooms.

Incidental spend on redemption awards earn points. It's not unreasonable for the OP to expect points (plus bonus) for his $190/night incidental spend.

In the past (when I wasn't Plat) I upgraded an award stay in London & received points. Never occurred to me that I wouldn't get them.

I disagree w/ you re: the onus is on the elite to prove they're entitled to points. I think the onus is on Marriott to prove they're not entitled to points & to point (pardon the pun ) to a specific clause in the T&Cs that says someone isn't entitled to points.

I think, since RI only grants points on room & the OP was upgrading a room, it was worth the try to get the points. Again, if Marriott wants to say upgrade costs don't earn points it has a very easy way of enforcing it. Put it in the T&Cs.

Cheers.

Unfortunately Marriott doesn't give points for redemption stay upgrades or cash+points. Doesn't make any sense, but they don't. If you're spending cash on the room, you should get credit for that even if its in conjunction with points award.
