Booking , expedia etc VS Marriott

Can't find answer ..
Does Marriott make money if someone use other website to book a room in Marriott hotels ?

Why do millions until now use other web site to book Marriott hotels and they well got nothing at the end ( points or breakfast ) not like airlines book a ticket from every where you still got the points ?

Do you think Marriott or SPG can do more to stop people using other website for booking in there hotels ? More than best rate guarantee for example

I we'll tell you way I ask this questions one of my friends is a Marriott member he just book himself with his familly a 15 days trip to Europ he go for booking because it's free cancellation and almost same price I told him you we'll not got the points plus you may got better deal
at MR web site he say I don't care it's just simple with free cancellation plus I can change my plan any time price not a big deal its just 20USD more at booking , I was shocked and thinking how many out there think the same way how they affecting the chain !
and Marriott starts new 3 days cancellation in USA , they must do better than other web sites to keep people book from them not the opposite ?

I'm really confused but if Marriott making money from booking i we'll be ok need some one to explain how this complicated system works !!

I have used 10% coupon from OTA to book Marriott hotels - as you know they have to match the price with Marriott so 10% discount is 10% cheaper than Marriott's rate - also expedia etc. do give out more generous cashback vs. Marriott plus they have their own loyalty programme.

Marriott can easily follow Hilton and IHG - no elite benefits when you booked via third party.

Marriott (currently/still) offers elite recognition benefits (free i-net, potential upgrade, lounge access or brekkie) & points on incidentals if rooms are booked through 3rd party sites.

Other chains don't; we'll see if it lasts w/ Marriott post-merger.

Cheers.

Yes, Marriott and the hotel will still receive something from someone staying even if they used a non-Marriott portal to make the reservation. But in most cases, Marriott and/or the hotel will probably make less than if the person made the reservation directly on the Marriott website. That is the reason most hotel chains (and even the airlines) try to steer customers to using their portals rather than 3rd party portals. Though different industries (airlines vs. hotels) and even different companies within a specific industry may use different approaches/tools to try to force or entice customers to use the portals that most benefit that company.

Once a FD manager at the former Renaissance Karlsruhe told me how BRG kills their earnings and some things about OTA likes booking.com (and how much he hates them) - I got a low BRG rate and he asked where I found the rate so I randomly said booking.com:

He said that when an OTA charged a lower price, a BRG claim will bring the room rate down by 25%, so they lose 25% than what they are supposed to earn. Then he said Marriott charges a percentage (can't remember how much) of a booking so they are not earning much at the end of the day on a 60 EUR booking.

Then he moved on to talk about OTAs - he said these horrible companies charge hotels a big commission (again can't remember the exact % but it more than Marriott).

Hotels love and hate OTAs - that guy admits that OTAs helped promoting their hotel (I asked if the hotel is so fed up with them why sells through them). I guess they got fed up being controlled tightly by Marriott so they changed flag.
