Online (ie no email) I saw my Gold was renewed for 2016. Only at 39 nights YTD, but I do have the Ritz card which bestows Gold annually. Given the variations noted in posts above, seems like a pretty funky algorithm going on.

I could be too. I was PP for 3 straight years and don't recall any notice until the cheap gift arrived but last year I recall losing the designation in my account around 2/28 or so...

I received a little pop-up today on the website that my Plat status has been renewed. I'll have 65 nights as of tomorrow with only 16 nights in a hotel and the rest promo nights.

And we will every year.
Until Marriott stops doing it.
And when Marriott stops doing it we'll have a thread complaining about that.

Congrats to all but remember that "when we're all special, none of us are special"... Upgrades, late checkouts, lounges have all reflected that since 2008 and can only get worse.

Yes, it's smart business for Marriott to dangle the carrot at so many so close but it's got to backfire and dilute it for those who earn it the hard way...

Maybe I don't have a complete understanding of how all this works as status goes with rollover nights but ...

Say, I was a P, and only had 70 nights this year. Then for next year, I'm a G starting with 20 rollover nights. With that kind of head start, I'll be a P again sometime midyear. So what has Marriott lost or gained? Me earning a few less points for a few months or my good will so that I don't run to Hyatt? Say I start the year with 20 rollover nights, earn 75 next year, I'd gain 20 rollovers for 2017. Then I get basically a double credit one for next year and then again for 2017 as the new roll over (right?, I don't have a higher degree in Marriott scamming)

Such high class problems

The calculus on who gains or loses, and what, is complex.

If you had Platinum status for this year and earned only 70 nights then "per the rules" you would drop to Gold next year and also start the year with 20 rollover nights. There's gain and loss in that. Loss: you drop to Gold for a period of time and enjoy marginally lower benefits. Gain: those 20 rollover nights may help you cinch an elite status level that you would otherwise not achieve. They also count toward lifetime status.

Now, if in December Marriott decides "Ehh, close enough" and comps you Platinum status for another year then you do keep Platinum benefits all the way through next year (gain to you) but you don't get those rollover nights (loss to you).

There's also the gain/loss to consider from Marriott's side. By comping you Plat status over Gold they likely feel they are better retaining your loyalty (their gain). They are also avoiding you rolling over a large number of nights to next year which you might have used to game the system (their gain). It's true that by having you as a Plat they have to pay out more points (small loss) but all the on-property benefits such as upgrades and exec lounge access are on a space-available basis or are largely fixed costs and anyway are borne by properties.

I had forgotten about PP renewal until just now.

Tonight is my last Marriott stay for the year. I'll end with 170 nights, 2 smallish events, and somewhere around 500K points earned. 2016 will be my fourth year in a row as a PP. I seem to have noticed comments in other threads that many people revert back to Plat after the third year as PP. Wonder if I will meet that same fate?

So confused

I got a card in the mail several months ago saying I could maintain plat with twenty more nights. I need approx 60 to make that happen. I have 66, and I have the "I have been renewed" on the website today. So am I officially good to go? (Or do I need to hustle up a meeting?)

Nope. You only roll over nights if yiu exceed requalification for your current level. Members who fall a level rollover no nights.

There also seems to be an annual "Marriott screwed up their renewal notices" thread. So don't be surprised if there's a "oops, sorry" update before long.

Mine shows on the pop up when I log in and click on My Account in the upper right tool bar. Message reads "Congratulations! Your Gold Elite status has been renewed." I'm at 35 nights, and do not recall getting any kind of email/mailing saying I would qualify with less than 50 nights. Of course I'm happy.

I am at 66 nights and will be 70 nights by the end of this week. Most of my nights are hotel stays. Still no message.
