This thread refers to the various Marriott brands within a specific geographic area. Marriott Bonvoy hotels in XX usually have posts asking which property is better, etc. Trip reports are usually better suited in the property specific threads.

Can someone who knows list the names of the hotels here in this long thread? Here are the names, addresses, email contact, commonly used abbreviations and some basic info about each hotel. (Location information, CL and breakfast information, UG experiences reported within the thread, typical room layout and frequently mentioned basic advice for different properties.) Keep in mind most posts indicate these are all great hotels. Hope this helps. CJK
  • JW Marriott Hotel Bangkok (JW) 4 Sukhumvit Road, Soi 2, Bangkok 10110, Thailand between the Phloen Chit and Nana BTS Stations. There is a pretty large CL. Elites mostly report having complimentary breakfast offered only at the CL and not in a restaurant. Some are bothered by the hotel's proximity to the Nana district and think the hotel may get some associated business while others (myself) have not really noticed this unless looking hard to see it. The hotel was recently renovated and there are a few posts showing pictures. UGs are usually to the club level regular room where the bathrooms are interior (no outside glass wall) and feature rather small showers but great soaking tubs. Unlike the other hotels listed here, the toilets are not in enclosures.
  • Renaissance Bangkok Ratchaprasong Hotel (Ren) 518/8 Ploenchit Road Khwaeng Lumphini, Khet Pathum Wan, Bangkok almost attached to the Chit Lom BTS Station and the SkyWalk. One can reach the platform without having to walk on public sidewalks and by using escalators/elevators in the building next door, so most feel this is the property with the fastest and easiest access to BTS. The CL is smaller than the JW's and sometimes gets full. Some elites report having a choice of the complimentary breakfast in the restaurant (which is quite good and huge) while others report having that request denied. Latest reports indicate the restaurant breakfast is offered as of April 2018. The hotel does not have many suites so UGs are usually to corner rooms which often have seating and/or dressing areas as well as larger bathrooms with full glass walls. IMO this is the best/most convenient hotel for a first timer looking to do typical touristy things in Bangkok.
  • Courtyard by Marriott Bangkok (CY) 155/1 Soi Mahadlekluang 1 Ratchadamri Road Bangkok is about a five minute walk to either the Ratchadamri or Chit Lom BTS Stations. The hotel operates tuk-tuks to/from the BTS Station. The hotel has a CL and consistently offers elites a choice of breakfast there or in the restaurant. The CL is on the top floor of the hotel and has outdoor seating. Having stayed at the hotel several times as a P, PP and LTP I have never been given an UG, so if there are others who can chime in on that please do. The regular room has a small interior only bathroom with a window overlooking the room and no tub, only a walk-in shower. IMO the price can makes this a great choice, as it is convenient to many places a visitor will go. Sometimes it can be half the price of other Marriott options and they often run double points promotions. (Call the hotel to ask, it cannot hurt.)
  • Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park (Sukhumvit Soi 22) 199 ถนน สุขุมวิท ซอย 22 Khwaeng Khlong Tan, Khet Khlong Toei, กรุงเทพมหานคร 10110, Thailand is about an eight minute walk to the Emporium Mall and Phrom Phong BTS Station either down the Soi sidewalk or through Queen's Park. The hotel operates a regular shuttle to the BTS Station although some have reported trouble catching it back to the hotel. The CL is large, with an outdoor deck, and most people report not being given a choice for the complimentary breakfast in the restaurant. Most Plats report getting UG to a suite, with the M Suite seeming to be most common. It has a living room, bedroom and single large interior bathroom with separate walk-in showers and tubs. This is the largest hotel in Bangkok.
  • Bangkok Marriott Hotel Sukhumvit (Sukhumvit Soi 57) 2 ถนน สุขุมวิท 57 Phra Khanong, Khlong Toei, กรุงเทพมหานคร 10110, Thailand ([email protected]) is a two minute walk to the Thong Lo BTS Station. Getting to the station involves crossing Thong Lo intersection which can be daunting. The hotel is about a ten minute BTS ride to the central malls, the Ren, etc. The area is a little quieter and more "Thai" than the more touristy/business area where the JW, Ren and CY are located. Some people report being able to have complimentary breakfast in the restaurant while others report lounge only. The CL is about the same size as the Ren's and can get crowded in the early evening. The hotel is on the higher floors of a 40+ story building and the CL is located on one of the top floors, offering stunning views of Bangkok. There is a rooftop bar on the top of the building with great views, too. Elites are often given a coupon for a free drink on the roof. Plats report mostly getting UGs to a two room suite with an extra half bath. The main bath includes an enclosed toilet, a single large walk-in shower and a large soaking tub that can easily seat two. (While the tub is large, the JW, Marquis and Ren tubs are more comfortable for a single person looking to lean back and relax.) IMO this is the quietest of the hotels listed here.
  • Bangkok Marriott Hotel The Surawongse 262 Thanon Surawong, Khwaeng Si Phraya, Khet Bang Rak, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon 10500, Thailand is the newest hotel. As of April 2018 there are not many posts from users who have stayed, nor is there an abbreviation being commonly used on this forum. The hotel is not attached/close to a BTS or MRT station but is near the Silom business area and some more popular adult entertainment establishments.

When I asked when the rooms will be ready the reply was "later this month".

A further update on the renovations at the JW. The mock up that was in the bar has now been removed (maybe because Christmas decorations???). The rooms being renovated are on the 8th, 9th and 10th floors. The target date for completion of work is December 15th. I might get the chance to see a room next week.

Which Cat 5 hotel to choose?

I realize that this thread is nothing but opinions about the Bangkok hotels, but I wanted to see if someone can give me a suggestion to a specific choice. I'll be staying for a week with the family, and I already have a Cat 5 certificate. So I have to choose between the 3 options. I am gold, so we're supposed to get the free breakfast. The things I most care about are nice breakfast in the restaurant (not lounge), best chance for a suite upgrade, good stuff at a lounge in the evening, and ease of getting to various tourist attractions. The Renaissance is looking pretty good for all that. Or would one of the 2 Marriotts be better?

The Ren generally does not allow free breakfast in the restaurant for Plats, let alone Golds. The restaurant breakfast is excellent, but very expensive, like $60+ a person on the weekends, and full with locals. The only time I've gotten breakfast in the restaurant is when the hotel was empty because of the government protests a couple years ago so they stopped serving breakfast in the lounge. When I've asked since I've been told no, which is an unusual word at this hotel. Given there was one of me and I was PP or Plat at the time (two different stays) breakfast with the family for a week with seems doubtful. IIRC the FS allows families breakfast in the restaurant because they don't want the kids in the lounge, but I'm not 100% sure of that.

You do realize that a Bangkok lounge breakfast is a far cry from an American lounge breakfast, and includes made to order eggs, noodles and many different entrees, right? And breakfast is limited to the Gold member and one guest. Kids are not automatically included as free extras. Hopefully others will know which of the Bangkok hotels allow the kids as extras for free, if any. In the Ren and the FS the lounges are small and get crowded, so they carefully check that people are eligible to use the lounge.

As for good stuff in the lounge in the evening, I'm not sure how old your kids are, but I think all of the hotels strictly follow a rule to toss kids out of the lounge at five o'clock. It's in the Welcome Letter. I've seen kids being told to leave and never seen kids in any of the lounges in the evening. Putting that to the side, each of the lounges is pretty equal in the evening offerings.

ADDED: A Bangkok FS representative posted on TA that kids are excluded from the lounge from 5:30 pm. I believe that age to be sixteen and below, but it might be higher. All the Bangkok hotels follow the same rule on this.

It depends on your budget and service preferences. While Sukhumvit has two of the most famous areas targeted at non-rich westerners out of three, there is a completely different market (more Asian-targeted and overall more upscale) along Rachada – around and up from the MRT Huay Kwang station. There are still other less known areas, on Phetchaburi to airport direction (similar to Huay Kwang, but cheaper and lower quality), somewhere around BTS Ari (Thai-targeted gogos) etc. The world is not limited by Nana Plaza LOL.

Absolutely, that area is the worse to stay in Bangkok. Actually I do find the whole of Silom end to be a pain to stay at. Weird that so many nice properties are in that dead end.
Having SPG / Marriott properties on the Rama 9 side would be fantastic, but there are none. So Sukhumvit is a second choice convenience-wise.

But, there are NO tourist attractions on Sukhumvit (outside of nightlife and malls). Sukhumvit suits those who like to partake in its wares.

The River is popular for a reason. One of them is its distance from "The Suk" It's a more historical area, adjacent to other older neighborhoods. Transportation by transit/River is plentiful. But road travel is messy. It's especially messy getting back to Sukhumvit. But, it's a snap to get to the Skytrain, the MRT, and the river boats.

Yes, and no. To me, the value of staying in the Sukhumvit area was the easy access to two BTS lines, one that takes you right to a major pier on the river, as well as the MRT, and yet being able to walk to good food and shopping. In my opinion, I'd rather travel around during the day, but stay closer to my hotel at night for dinner, drinks, nightlife. But it probably depends on what your interests are and how you like to travel too, so to each his own.

Staying close to Asoke makes the whole of civilized Bangkok easily accessible without being dependent on traffic (for taxi and buses) or weather (for walking). This is the major benefit – one can just go anywhere. Siam is a bit less convenient in this sense, but still decent.

What do you refer to as "attractions"? Apart from the single area of the palace and several temples around, that is not connected by BTS/MRT and is just good for a one-time visit, I believe, everything else is connected. Especially transportation hubs (two major bus terminals, BKK airport, main railway station). Even though taxi is cheap in Bangkok, traffic issues make it a pain to stay away from BTS/MRT, unless you really don't intend to go anywhere beyond your personal walking distance.

I had lunch at the buffet on 10 Dec but didn’t get around to asking about the new rooms. I’ve been sufficiently happy at the Marquis that the new rooms at the JW don’t matter to me. I’m also skeptical that they’ll do much more than surface level changes, and won’t overcome more systemic issues in the building, or with poor plumbing, etc.

I’ve seen kids definitely under the age of 16 — and probably under 12 even — in the Marquis lounge two out of two nights I visited this week.

Not a good trend.

Were they running around being disruptive, having food fights & screaming? Otherwise I don't understand how just being kids & being in the lounge is a bad trend. I say this not even having kids.

Cheers.

They were well behaved.

But either there are rules or there aren’t. This could be the thin edge of the wedge.

I recently had a very nice stay at the Renaissance Bangkok. Excellent Gold recognition, upgraded at checkin from Deluxe King to Studio Suite (essentially a large corner room but suited me perfectly). All in very good order & nice & quiet too. Club Lounge staff were attentive & friendly.

At check-in I was offered breakfast in the main restaurant, Flavors, or the Club Lounge & chose the restaurant - it was excellent. Overall I really couldn’t fault the place and will happily return.
