Some Marriott hotels consist almost entirely of identical "cookie cutter" rooms. The Des Moines Downtown Marriott comes to mind. Apparently, when it was built in the 1980s, the idea was to give every guest the same experience.
With the exception of one or two hospitality suites, every room at the Des Moines Downtown Marriott is the same. Even the corner rooms don't have side windows. The room on the concierge floors have the same square footage, furnishings, and amenities as the regular rooms. The Concierge Lounge is down on the mezzanine level.
It makes a meaningful Gold, Platinum, or PP upgrade pretty much impossible.

On a high floor
Away from the elevators
Away from the ice & soda machines
In addition, whenever I might call the front desk about an issue with my room,it is addressed virtually immediately.
Not so much at the Fremont Marriott. Checked in last night acknowledged as an "elite member" and offered a room on the 2nd floor of a 10 story hotel.
Asked for higher and given one on the 5th next to the elevators and vending room.
Maybe they didn't like my corporate rate being about 1/2 the rack rate.

Why would the clerk care what your rate is?

understandable the property doesn't want to give suite upgrades for a 5 night stay; they could be selling it multiple times to other folks. I guess if you check in late and they pretty much see no chance to sell it anymore they are much more likely to give it to you. I have never gotten suites for such long stays, only 1-2 night stays.

Wow ... that language is much more ambiguous than it used to be!
In terms of upgrades, suite upgrades for a 5 days stay are very difficult. I have a CY that I stay at several times a year that works hard on upgrading me to suites. Otherwise, on 3 day or longer stays, I don't think you can expect a suite that they would hope to sell. I do pretty well as a PP on properties with suites on single night stays.
