Compensation for bugs? Twice.

Short story. FS Hotel. 7 Night reward stay in Caribbean I'm Plat.

2nd night. Cochroaches. Alerted hotel. Came back, room had a bug bomb. Bad chemical smell. No note regarding chemicals, changed room after 6 hours when couldn't stay in room.

Three nights later. Land Termites in closet all over floor and closet with clothes.

Offered one night stay comped (not sure how many points) and dinner. We had to change rooms again. Mgr brought up housekeeping and maintenance, said he would 'freak out' if he saw this in his room. We were not given choice to stay in room.

Mgr said laundry services not available over weekend. Not sure where else bugs are. Searching all bags.

We are at Punta Islita in CR right now. Found a tiny lizard in our bed tonight. We found it a bit charming. Now I am wondering if we should demand comp.

Critters are a fact of life in the tropics. Can be a pain, but it happens.

Prior to 2 posts are Complete BS. You shouldn't have to have BUGs in your room like that. We aren't talking a single lizard. On top of the fact this is now the 2nd BUG issue at your hotel. I would demand a free night in points for each night you had bugs and also demand they clean whatever bugs were in your clothes. Complete BS to say Laundry is closed on weekends. I travel all over the caribbean and NEVER had that issue. Possibly 150 stays.

I would also shame the hotel on Trip Advisior, here, Yelp etc if they failed to satisfy your demands. 1) I am sure others experienced Bugs there too 2) Nothing worse in a review then Bugs in your room (sans a theft).

To say this is the Caribbean so you have to deal with it is complete BS imho and sounds like advice from Marriott Homers.

And what kind and how many chemicals do you suggest being exposed too. Bug are a part of the environment. The only way to get them out is to kill them with toxic stuff. Now if they were bed bugs I would have a different issue but cockroaches and termites will do you know serious harm, the chemicals to kill them would most likely. As for the hotel these things pop up even at the best places in the tropics and putting out the fire often takes more than 1 treatment.

I see we have run into that ancient dichotomy: tourist vs. traveller.

To each his own. IMHO, the free night and free laundry offered to OP seems about right.

Hope you are having a great trip otherwise, OP.

Note to self - don't visit the Caribbean. While it might be commonplace, I would definitely freak out if I saw cockroaches & land termites in my room.

Cheers.

Might not want to visit FL, MS, AL or TX. Lots of bugs and invasive ones for that matter.

I would seek one meeeeeeelion dollars.

Seriously though... how many cockroaches? If one maybe you brought it in!? Two? Twenty? Strange you can see them as they usually hide and only come out when dark. You sure it was a roach? Not sure what land termites are. Is that a common critter down there?

Follow up, the cochroaches weren't a big deal. As some posters said, you can't expect not to have them from time to time. The main issue was the chemicals used without notice and no note. We changed rooms, and it was a hassle, but I wasn't seeking compensation then. It was after the termite infestation (several hundred) that occurred in the closet and were in our clothes and shoes. The termites had dropped their wings, and these littered the floor. We had been gone most of the previous 3 days, so it could havebeen an issue when we changed roomx the first time at 10pm.

I didnt seek compensation, but was offered it by the night manager. It was more upseting to have the bugs in my clothes, and the potential to bring them home as well. Changing rooms again when you have limited time left on the island and leaving in 36 hours is a pain, but I will give everyone credit at the hotel for their response. The manner in which they have responded has helped me consider to return, and it also tells me that what I have experienced is not typical. This wasn't a cute little lizzard running around. I would have taken photos of my new 'pet'.

Thanks to those who commented on the compensation offered. I have stayed over 500 nights with Marriot, and had never received or needed compensation, so I wanted to see if they were being generous, or just trying to pacify me. Now, instead of only being upset at my experience, I am suprised at their generosity.
