Sorry you made incorrect assumptions, but it's not fine print.

It says two stays for one free night. You could have had consecutive nights at the Fairfield Inn and then the Springhill Suites across the street. But you cannot have one two night stay in the Fairfield for the free night.

The expiration period for free credit card nights has always been 6 months. This is nothing new.

Welcome to FT; it pays to slow down and read the T&C rather than assuming that it's the same for every program.

You should have read this before posting in this subforum: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/hotel...d-read-me.html
This topic is more appropriate for the Marriott subforum; I suspect that most of the Marriott regulars will roast you for not reading the T&C and then starting a thread about it.

Marriott refused to extend mine when I made themistake of assuming it would be the sme as it's competitors. When contacted, Marriott made it very clear that the could not care less but they're sorry if "Idon't understand their position" Anyone else have a similar experience?
Welcome to FlyerTalk!

It always pays to actually read the terms & conditions of anything, rather than assume. I don't see where you have any gripe against Marriott, they followed the terms of their offers, which having used both of these I recall are clearly stated. Honestly it's not their fault that you made incorrect assumptions. Chalk it up to experience.

Do you have a link to the promotion? I found a "free night for eligible members who make just two paid stays* between September 15, 2013 and January 15, 2014 at participating Marriott International hotels" promotion. Did not find one that advertises a free night for two paid nights.

Should be titled "Beware ALL fine print". Always always always read fine print, or at least scan it to make sure nothing applies to you. This goes for everything in life you do.

Westwindblows excellent advice, but as tatterdema said, I would extend that to anything and everything. It is always good to read the fine print, aka terms and conditions as they are better known in Marriott parlance, as that is what outlines the rules and benefits of the program.

But we understand you are venting and underneath it all really mentally beating yourself up for not being more knowledgeable. That's OK, welcome to FT, stick around for a while, read some (or a lot) and get knowledgeable, but just be forewarned that it can lead one to being jaded, cynical, and/or a sense of entitlement (all depending on one's perspective).
