Marriott refused to extend mine when I made themistake of assuming it would be the sme as it's competitors. When contacted, Marriott made it very clear that the could not care less but they're sorry if "Idon't understand their position" Anyone else have a similar experience?

It always pays to actually read the terms & conditions of anything, rather than assume. I don't see where you have any gripe against Marriott, they followed the terms of their offers, which having used both of these I recall are clearly stated. Honestly it's not their fault that you made incorrect assumptions. Chalk it up to experience.
