While you think it's a waste to use points on a lower cat property, sophiegirl's points are valid. Not everyone wants/needs/can find a high end property & there are many circumstances where using them at lower cat categories can come in handy - illness such as she described, visiting the kids at college (not everyone goes to Harvard), change in financial circumstances, staying at a property/doing a mini-vacation in an area where there aren't any hi-end properties, using them at a lower-end property that has extremely high rates due to an event, etc, etc.

But that was replying to her saying not everyone stays at resorts. Her point was that using points on a lower end property is not necessarily a 'waste' as you stated in a couple of posts. One person's waste is another person's priceless.
Cheers.
Cheers.

Let's try this with a real life example.
My Mother wants to go see my niece from 1/21 to 1/24. The rate at the Redmond Marriott for those dates is $259, a total of $873. It is a class 4 - a lower end property as outlined in this discussion - so it will cost 65K in points.
My Mother is in her 80's and lives in NC, while my niece lives in Seattle and has a life threatening disease.
Is this 3 night stay worth 65K? By most FT standards, NO. But for my Mother - who wants to see her Granddaughter, does not necessarily HAVE $873, but DOES have access to 65K in points, it is.
Stating that using points in low end properties is wasteful can be belittling to those who do so. Every family circumstance is different, and TEHO.
I'm just sayin'....

I have gifted points and/or miles to family and friends for a variety of reasons myself, over the years. It's always different if it is a gift in that sense, where the value to the person receiving the points or miles is far above the real world value, so far in fact, that it is no longer about money, it is about heart.

You have been a Marriott rewards member since before I was born. That is some loyalty right there. O.O
