I'm staying there in July and I recently started a thread on the construction so you can search for that. All comments I heards were very positive on the hotel itself and ssuggested the construction impact should be minimal. I'm still a little concerned but am staying there anyway.

I've seen extensive discussions about the construction going on, and I have yet to hear someone say it was a big problem. It's all internal construction, so there isn't any real heavy stuff going on.

As for the resort, It is really great!! The pool area is one of the nicest I've ever seen. They have a nice little poolside Beach Cafe that serves very good breakfast burrittos and burgers.

Great location right on the beach, with a beautiful beach way to many great restuarants and upscale shopping. The Whaler's Village is a 2 minute walk along the beach walkway. It is also a 1/4 mi from famous Front St in downtown Lahaina, where you will find many more nice shops and eateries.

On Front St. make sure to try Moose Mcgillicuddy's. Good happy hour specials, and the best shrimp dinner around. Prices are very reasonable. Chicago Pizza is also very good, with live entertainment. IMO avoid Cheeseburger in Paradise, unless you like places with a great view, but lousy food.

Also very good -
Lahaina Fich co. - Front St.
Hula Grill - on beach near Marriott

I am staying in the time share section in July--got a fabulous rate on the 2 bedroom oceanfront villa. Since the construction is not in that wing, I am not too bothered. Also, I am there over a weekend; and the construction is only Monday-Friday.

Is Lahaina really only 1/4 mile from the Marriott? (have never been to Maui)- Is walking feasible? We will have a car anyway, but its nice to know if you can walk (makes the mai tais more enjoyable

The distance from the hotel to Lahania is about 2-3 miles. Easy drive, but I wouldn't recommend walking it. Although you would certainly work-up a thirst for those fruity beverages!

The distance to Front St. is walkable, it is more than 1/4 mi, I guess, but not 3 mi, maybe 1.5 mi, whatever, but the point is you have to travel on a highway so it really wouldn't be safe.

By the way, IMHO the best frozen drink in the area is made right at the resort, the Lava Flow at the poolbar. Its basically a banana strawberry daquiry that is to die for. The only bad thing is they have a happy hour for them at 11AM, for some strange reason.

I own a timeshare at the resort, so I know it real well. I'm going back 2/04. If you have any other questions let me know.

Regards.
Joe

We were there in March with 4 teenagers and stayed in the timeshare 2BR Villa (ocean view). We also got a fabulous rate off the web site--but I haven't seen anything close to it since! One perk from renting a time share directly from Marriott is you get daily maid service, which we really needed. Lots of sand from so many people! We had an incredible time! No construction then, so I can't comment on that. One of the funnest things we all did was take a surfing lesson. (really!). It wasn't nearly as hard as we thought it would be. Truly a highlight--especially for the kids. Be sure to have dinner at the Plantation Restaurant. Make 5:30 reservations and watch the sun go down--just incredible. We're all ready to go back!

Per Mapquest it is 3.39 miles from the hotel to the begining of Front St.

I will be staying in my timeshare from July 5-26.If anyone is up for drinks or dinner during this time just e-mail.
Walk to town I think it is a long way maybe a bike ride then again with no siewalks and the traffic you are taking a risk. A cab is your best bet. I have a car for my whole stay if anyone doesn't have one and needs to go to town just give me a shout. I go to town pretty much eveyday for some reason or another.

Just curious--what rate did you get? I am paying 419/night for the 2 bdrm 3 bath oceanfront unit, and it includes full breakfast for 2 in VaBene. I think this is a really great rate, which I was glad to snap up when I saw it on the internet last summer--it was there one day, then poof never to be seen again for my time period. Regular oceanview hotel rooms (in the unconverted wing) are (were) going for 289/night during my stay(beg July)

Who did you use for the surf lessons? My teenager would like to rent a board or take some lessons. He did some surfing last year in Waikiki and loved it.

Thanks!

We had the same deal you do for $369/night.
Plus, Marriott called the day after our arrival and offered our last night free if we would do their TS presentation. We'd been through it before but did it again. I think it lasted 10 minutes. Not much to tour since we were already staying in one (!)
I'm not sure of the surf place name--Island Adventures or something. But you can't miss them. They're right on the beach--a little farther down past the Kaanapali Ali.
Surfboards lined up on the sand. If you do take a lesson, they loan you UV short sleeved shirts. But bring your own LONG sleeved one (buy at Costco). It'll save your arms--everyone had rashes afterwards (friction from the board and salt water).
Have a fabulous time. If you have any more questions, just ask.

Wow! I don't feel so special anymore
Well, even at 419 I think it is a good deal. I have 6 people, so it seems much roomier and nicer than 2 hotel rooms, plus its cheaper. After Maui, we are on to Waikiki for 2 free rooms at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Did the Hilton Waikoloa and the Hilton Hawaiian Village last year! HAD to get back Hawaii; we loved it so much!

Thanks for the other tips--

quick question--the breakfast at Va Bene--do they give you dated certificates to use or credit your bill or what?

Thanks

Regarding the construction I understand it recently started which may explain the lack of feedback.

$419 is still a great deal. I'd grab it today if I could find it. It's hard to find 2BR's anymore for rent. We just got very lucky.
Va Bene had our name on file, so they just charged our room for the kids' breakfasts. No certificates. You'll just sign a bill with zero balance. It was all very easy. Have a great time! We've stayed at HWV twice, but never at HHV.

Aloha,

In regards to the 2 bedroom/2 bath villa's at the Maui Marriott, how often do they really become available? And if so, what views are available (assuming all units are available)?

Also, we haven't seen the Maui Marriott since 2001. Took a quick walk through pool area, definintly ALOT nicer thna their old pool. We didn't make it through the lobby. What kinds of store's remain throughout the lobby? When we stayed there in 1998, there were a few, but not as many as the Hyatt.

Any other info would be helpful.

thanks,
Craig
