Automatic Platinum Renewal for 2003?
I have been Platinum for two years, 2001 & 2002. My travel dropped alot in 2002 and I didn't even qualify for Silver.
So, to my surprise, I received a Platinum welcome mailer yesterday. I've been renewed until 2004!
Any ideas?

Same thing happened to me. I've had over 95 nights each in 2000 and 2001. This past year I spent a couple months in a corporate apartment at the request of a client to save costs. I struggled to get 50 nights for Gold. Then this week I got a Platinum renewal letter and card in the mail. I was suprised. I've been thinking of switching to Hilton and thought this would be a good time since I lost Platinum status. However, Marriott just bought my loyalty for another year at least.

At least in my case it looks that way. I'm usually on your side of the fence, not sure how I feel about comping plat level status. But, when it works to my advantage I'm not going to complain.

The same thing happened to me last year. I only managed 50 nights in 2001 but got to keep my Platinum status for 2002.

As I posted (and was yelled at for) before, I had a total of 7 nights in 2001 and still received Platinum for 2002. I had a total of 12 nights in 2002, don't know what my status is yet with Marriott this year!
I look at it like the lottery; maybe I'll win again, maybe not.

Last year I was 14 nights short of requalifying for Gold.
I expected to see Silver in my online account. However, seeing that it still says Gold and the counter didn't reset, I checked my elite status over the phone. Here's what it said:
"You have stayed 0 nights towards renewing your Gold level membership. Your Gold level membership will automatically be renewed for an additional year if you have stayed a total of 50 nights before December 31, 2003."
So does that mean I too get an extension on this year for Gold status?

That's my guess. I was quite short of requalifying for gold. My newly reset for the year account still says gold with zero nights credit and 50 nights to go.

I was 3 nights short of Plat last year. I just received a Gold card in the mail.
I'm going to be calling Marriott and seeing what they can do for me.
If not, Hilton here I come!

I travelled alot last year, about 200 nites out of town, but Marriott did not have any properties where my work was, so I only got in 40 nites with MR. I called and they told me not to worry that they would take my travel patterns into consideration.
However, it now shows me being demoted to GOLD. Adios Marriott, hello Hilton and Starwood.

I got my Gold card today, along with an offer to buy Platinum for 50k points. Also got the elite exclusive offers in the same envelope.

well, well, well..........
Marriott did some checking and realized that I stayed with them 120 nights in 2000 and 150 nights in 2001 and decided I deserved Platinum status in 2003, even if I only stayed 40 nites in 2002.
Adios Gold and hello Platinum, again.... It was just aggravating that I even had to ask..... Grrrrrrr

I think the term "deserved" is an arguable point
