$100 or 10K MR points?

I referred a friend to MVCI, and he will be taking a timeshare tour in July. MVCI tells me that after he takes the tour I can choose to receive 10,000 points or a $100 credit toward my timeshare maintenance fee. It's not a situation where these points are needed to reach a desired award level. Cash is always good, but I wonder if the points aren't worth too much to pass up. Any advice?

To me (totally personal) I would take the points. I equate it to having to "theoretically" spend $10,000 on the VISA. I know that we get better deals on points than that, of course at times, particularly when trading the year's use of your timeshare. Another way to look at it is if you rent a room for $100 and put it on your VISA. The absolute most points you will get is 1330 if you are Platinum. We're close to a million points for the second time in 1 year, but I would still take the points. Where are they doing a timeshare tour that you will get points? We have only recieved points by taking tours ourselves. Thanks.

He's touring one of the Marriott properties in Hilton Head, but I don't think the location had anything to do with MVCI's saying that I'd receive points for the referral.

Thanks for your thoughts on whether to take the points or the cash.

Check out www.vacationclub.com, and log in to the Owner's Clubhouse for details on the FriendShare program. It says that if you live in MN, NC, PA, SC, TX or VA you will get 10K points (or the $100 credit) when your friend takes a tour of any Marriott timeshare. Residents of most other states are rewarded (40K points or a 50% credit) only when their friend makes a purchase.
