Marriott Cheques - Value and Usage?

I am wondering if anyone has any comments on Marriott Cheques?

Looking at the reward chart, it is probably not worth it to spent them on room charges. However, it seems good for paying personal incidentals (like golf, massage...) on business trips.

Do the cheques come in different denominations (i.e. if you order the $1000 reward - do you get a single $1000 check that you have to use in one shot?)

Also, I read the T&C and not quite sure about its usage. Wouldn't it basically be good for anything that is chargeable to the room? Isn't it just deducted against your account at check out?

Thanks,

Steven

I received 20 * $50 Marriott Cheques. They were valid for 1 year.

They are transferrable when gifted.

I have found several times when getting the Marriott cheques made more sense than other awards. Most often the other awards are a better deal.

Why not?

Checques come in 25, 50, and 100. Beware that if one does not receive credit or $ back from Marriott Cheques. i.e. if you were to pay a $110 folio w/$125 in Marriott Cheques, you do not receive $15 back in any form, you lose it.

Ok, I did more thinking, I guess it really depends on how you use your points.

$1000 = 180,000 points
2 Nights at Cat 4 = 38,000

Assuming a Cat 4 hotel is $100 a night, then:

180,000 points = $1000 = 5 x 2 nights
38,000 points x 5 = 190,000 > 180,000

so it is probably worth it (since some taxes might be high - rewards have no taxes). On the other hand, if you combine the cheques with promotions, then it will be worth it.

However, if it is a cat 7 hotel:

$1000 will not be able to get you 7 nights at a cat 7 (150,000 points)

There is probably a break-even/what-if chart we can make :-)

Is this what you were thinking?

Do you still get your full portfolio amount credited to Marriott Rewards if you pay by Marriott Cheques?

Thanks,

Steven

In the past I have received the full portfolio reward and all bonuses.

I am waiting to see if paying a little of the balance on Visa qualifies for the Visa promotion.

It will, I have been using Marriott Cheques for most of my balance then paying w/the visa for $15 or so. It has worked on 8 stays so far.
