I think the point that travelexpert is trying to make is that the next one will be pretty much the same as this one. Just as this one is pretty much the same as the one before it, and so on and on, etc.

At least the meanies promotion is better this time than last time.
This time, I get 2000 miles starting from the second stay.
Last time, I needed to hit 500, 1000, 1000, before 2000.

New promotions coming for Golds?
The mega miles and mega-bonus promotions are ending.
Anyone hear of what's coming? I'm almost platinum...

For as many people who would like to see Marriott "mix it up", there are just as many who would prefer that Marriott's promotions be consistent and predictable from quarter to quarter, year to year. One thing's for sure - one group or the other will come to FT to complain about it.

Do other people book most of their award nights for the weeks between promotions? I wonder if the promo schedules alter enough people's behavior to noticeably affect overall booking statistics.

We book award nights when we are on vacation, paid nights are primarily dictated by my husband's work schedule and paid by them as well. Virtually no impact here unless he is only one night away from a very big bonus, then I'll get the cheapest night I can to hit it.

Besides Marriott, I also belong to Best Western, Choice, Club Carlson, Hilton HHonors, IHG Priority Club, SPG, and Wyndham Rewards, so with all that, almost always someone has a promo going that at least slightly interests me, and so I can pick whoever's got the best promo for me (with properties I can afford on my budget available to me where I need to stay at that time).

Not sure about others, but we do look very carefully about max. the promos. I guess it's because we are paying the stays ourselves.

I "follow the promos". Ie, I jump around from one hotel program to another depending on who's got the best promo for my buck (which btw in my case is all personally paid and thus price sensitive). So I'm staying at Marriott like crazy through the end of April, just one stay short of maxing out MegaMiles, but no Marriott stays planned after that until the next promo.

My award nights have nothing to do with the promotion start and stops, but when I can combine them with ff flights on vacation and the award expiration dates. I probably contribute to the dips in stays between promos. I'm sure Marriott is aware of the promotion start/stop effect, if any. Until the next promo, I will likely stay in Hilton and IHG properties, since promo central says "no new promotions" and I've maxed out the two offered to me. The only incentive for continued Marriott stays is keeping Platinum status and/or chipping away at the lifetime Plat status (currently at 616 nights), which I feel better doing when there is a promo.
Marriott Rewards MegaBonus 2012 (Achieved)
Marriott Rewards MegaMiles (Achieved)
I am also extremely price-sensitive, although all hotels are expensed. My last 8 FI nights prior to today averaged <$40/night. Tonight is the TownePlaceSuites for <$70.

Just Maybe.

The next one will actually be generous.
And actually entice me to give a lot of nights to Marriott.
It will be SOOOOO generous, that NOBODY will complain.
It will look more like the best of Hyatt (Faster free Nights) or Hilton (one free night at ANY property for 10 nights with no limit)...
