This.

Wife and I will stay at a U.S. Marriott this month. The stay is in my name. My wife needs 13 Marriott points. Tried to change the reservation to her name, but that would require setting up a new reservation and by doing so the room charge would go up significantly.

Question: How can 13 points be earned easily? (Neither of us has a Marriott credit card right now. We don't do Facebook, so any offers through it would not work. And we won't be renting a car.) It seems that you can earn points by dining, or buying a drink or something, at the hotel…but since the stay will be in my name, could my wife still earn points in this manner, for example by telling the waiter to use her account number? (Any suggestions would be appreciated.)

At check-in, advise that you want your wife to earn MR points instead of you and give her account number that will earn the points -- this presents no problem and I have done this, although rarely because I hold Platinum status.

However, if you have status, likely then the only status that will be applied will be that of your wife. Some have waited until after the stay is almost complete and then ask for the change in the reservation to be made when settling the bill -- I am against that but one's ethics dictate.

Does she need the points to redeem an award? If so just transfer points from your account to hers and order the award.

Actually not that. Just needs a few more points before transferring all her points out to United account.

Thanks. Good to know that this is possible.

Muji,

You could also try calling MR and asking them to just give her the 13 points so that she can top off her account for the transfer. If you have any status this might help and you could always say that your business travel has picked up and you want to concentrate all of your dual stays to your account to maximize your elite status, as well as future loyalty to Marriott.

Thanks, NJUPINTHEAIR. If spending at the hotel won't generate the points needed, I thought of doing exactly that.

Your wife could buy 1,000 points for $12.50 from the Marriott website. They'll credit to her account usually within a few hours.

Cheers.

I dined at a hotel restaurant after checking out (so could not charge to my room)...can I send in to Marriott for the points if I have my confirmation number?

You would think that would be an easy thing to do, but I suspect the response is going to be no. I have not read anyone claiming they've done it and I haven't done it. If you do call, and you should, remind them SPG allows you to get points even if you are not booked at the property! If a similar event should occur in the future, save yourself the hassle and let the front desk know you want to eat onsite and ask them to keep the folio open and ask the restaurant to call the charge over. This I have done when having breakfast on my last morning.
