Getting miles back for cancelled reservation
How easily do they return points used to book room when you cancel reservation. With the changes to catagory for a hotel I frequent was going to book stays next year. With booking so far in advance might have to cancel

If I remember correctly, you will usually see your points back into your account within the day you return your award. Its pretty quick.
With that said, Marriott does allow you to make award reservations without actually having to order the needed award. But I think you will have to call MR and get them to make the reservation if you don't want the points taken out of your account.
Note that if you don't call and pull the points from your account by a week before your account Marriott's system will automatically try to pull the points and order the appropriate award for you.

For award reservations I have made via the web site, the points have been returned immediately after I cancel the reservation.
Per the note from Marriott Concierge, you need to both book a reward and order the certificate before March 8th. I.e. For properties that are going up a category, you can only speculatively book as many reservations as you have points to cover by March 8th.
