MEL Marriott

Searching didn't reveal a whole lot of information on this property. A bunch of one or two reply threads, only three in the last couple years

So here is my question

I am trying to book an award room for "four = 2A/2K"

I get " The hotels available on your dates cannot accommodate 4 guests per room." to be fair, I get this at Hyatt as well; I'm trying SPG next.

However I decided to try expedia and see what they had for 2A/2K and low and behold they have

Prices are per room/unit with 4 guests. Change your search
Room type Wed Thu Fri Avg rate per night*
Premier Room-Non-Refundable
$261 $261 $261 $260.86
BOOK NOW
One queen or two double beds with signature Marriott bedding
Premier Room
$290 $290 $290 $289.96
BOOK NOW
One queen or two double beds with signature Marriott bedding Executive Level Room-Non-Refundable
$351 $351 $351 $351.16
BOOK NOW
One queen bed or two double beds with premium bedding.

and so on and so on

So my question is why can't I get one of these as an award for four guests? When I tried paying thru Marriott.com I get the same error message; they (expedia) can sell them as I made sure that I put four guests down.

So what happens if I use expedia, and show up with four which appears to be a violation of some kind of policy at this property?

edited to add: Before I forget, what is the renovation status at this property?

possible no more rooms available as rewards? when you going? March sometime is a crazy period for hotels there due to some race going on so maybe it's part of the special event period?

Just checked the website, and if you click a room type, then click the room amenities tab, it notes maximum occupancy is 3 for standard rooms. Strangely, the suites all have max of only 2!

I figure marriott.com is enforcing that restriction, but the other websites don't really enforce the restriction.

I'll be staying March 20-april 4, seems like a decent place from all i've seen so far.

I am pretty sure they are still operating at reduced capacity. All floors being sold are refurbed now but not all online yet. This may be what is causing these odd results.

As of mid Jan the lounge was closed for refurb too, with breakfast in the hotel rest and $50 credit a night for the bar for drinks/food....

I also tried revenue stays for the same dates (just in case it was an award issue) with the same results

Marriott may be enforcing that restriction and if so, what are my remedies through expedia who is blatently selling these rooms for four guests. Its reasonable to assume that if expedia is doing this that I should expect to be able to check in with four

I would recommend calling the hotel and speaking with the reservations manager after 5 PM Sunday-Thursday evenings (9 AM Monday-Friday morning in Melbourne). If you cannot speak with the reservations manager, then ask for his email address. My guess is that it would not be a problem, but if not at least you should find out why they don't offer rooms for 4 people on their web site.

Well since I don't want to call Australia from the US, I will probably call the SPG plat line and see what they have to say. I will request them to clarify for me via contact with the property.
