But am Secretely hopeful some sort of upgrade is in my future up upgrading. But I am "confused" about one thing thought and that the MTR.

Im taking the airport express and know to get off at Kowloon station. The hotel is above the station correct? Why is there a not to far upstream post about there being a walk to the MTR. I thought the MTR was Kowloon for it and the Airport Express.

Thanks!!

The W is just above the station--though there is some walking involved! The W Hong Kong website spells it out:

If you are travelling to W Hong Kong from Hong Kong Airport (HKG), we highly recommend taking the Airport Express train service - the fastest and most direct route from the Airport to Kowloon Station.

Acting as a dedicated airport railway service that's fast and reliable, the MTR Airport Express provides a convenient way to begin your travels upon arriving at Hong Kong International Airport. Operating at 10-minute intervals (5:50 AM to 1:15 AM) daily, the Airport Express will have you in Kowloon Station within 24 minutes, from there just head up the escalators in Elements Mall to find W Hong Kong.
  • Single Journey Cost: HK$105 (adult), HK$52.5 (child)
  • Round Trip Cost: HK$185 (adult), HK$105 (child)
  • Estimated Time: 24 minutes

The HK airport express goes right under the W. However, it takes a little bit to walk to the MTR (separate from Airport express). It is not too far that it becomes a deal breaker. The W is a nice hotel though I don't love the location. Starwood has been underrepresented in HK -- Sheraton has a good location but is not the nicest hotel, Le Meridien in the middle of nowhere. The W is not near the main business area or the TST shopping area, it is ensconced it a mall, a nice one but a mall nonetheless. It is also near a tunnel to get over to central that is convenient but costs a lot in tolls. But overall it is a pretty nice property.

Well, in fairness the Four Seasons Hong Kong is "ensconced in a mall" as well. Shopping is sort of what HK is about to some degree.

Regards

P.S. I completely agree with your general premise though, that SPG is not well represented in HK, on that we agree.

Four Seasons is a great location though (I like IFC mall where 4 Seasons is more than the W mall) especialy since you can hold meetings there and get to Exchange Square etc in a matter of minutes by walking. But I get what you are saying for sure. They are building a giant new Sheraton (but it seems a little far away from the central areas too) and the St. Regis is being put up. Hopefully that location will be better once the construction in the area eases up. In the meantime, I switched more stays to JW in 2017. Fairly nice though they don't let plats get breakfast int he main buffet area, though the lounge breakfast is pretty good.

The Airport Express line is linked to the W, but you have to get to Hong Kong station and walk through an underground tunnel (about 5 mins) to reach the main MTR line on HK island. So the location is convenient for getting from and to the airport, but not as great when you're trying to explore HK.

Actually, I’m not a fan at all of the FSHK—whose lobby is crowded with shoppers, tourists, and business conference types in a maddening chaos that isn’t remotely luxurious IMO. I am similarly turned off by the Peninsula lobby here, too, though that’s only a crazy tourist fiasco.

It is true that both the W and RC are located inconveniently well outside of the main Kowloon business district where the Peninsula and InterContinental are located. But it’s just a 10 min taxi ride from the W/RC to the Peninsula. Both the W and RC both feel refined and luxurious by virtue of their impressive builds and decor and because there are no maddening crowds in their lobbies—with the RC obviously feeling much more luxurious (and with much nicer views due to its crazy height) than the W.

The FS is in Central on Hong Kong Island across from Kowloon. The JW Marriott is just a 10-15 min taxi ride east of the FS, in the same building as my favorite Hong Kong hotel, The Upper House. The new StR is being built just across from the Convention Center on the Island, just a block or so from the Renaissance and about a 15 min walk from the JW and TUH.

My next trip to HKG will be my 2nd trip there. I'm no expert, but if memory serves me correctly, Hong Kong Airport Express station is after Kowloon after departing airport.

Last st month I was there and opted to ride the Airport Express all the way to Hong Kong before switching over to the MTR line that would get me to Mongkok. It wS my first time there and I knew I'd be exploring the MTR a lot as I had the tourist Unlimited MTR card.

Think im good with using the W's info for sure. I just wonder why the MTR website is directing me to get off at Tsingtao Yi from the airport express (AE) and make my way to the hotel via connections to Austin instead of telling me to remain on the AE for the Kowloon stop!

thank you! I ended up checking that out as well after recalling I checked out the info about the Sheraton and it wasn't as detailed oriented with regards ro using the metro. Or maybe it was the two Mira h
Design hotels. I forget. But after reading the reviews for all three I opted to splurge and go for the W.

If you take the airport express you can take a free shuttle bus to most major hotels. Typically I take airport express to Kowloon station (the 2nd stop after Qing Yi and before Central) where the W is and then take free bus to Sheraton as it is first stop. I’ll take a taxi from Sheraton back to airport express As it stops at a ton of other hotels before making its way back to airport express and takes 45 mins- hour.

Grtting around hk by public transport is convenient and I often prefer it to a chauffeured car

Which MTR station are you talking about? The MTR station below W is Kowloon Station, which houses both the Airport Express line and Tung Chung line, albeit on different but adjacent platforms. Both lines are of equal distances from the W.

The MTR runs into Kowloon station as does the Airport Express. You take the Airport Express from HKG airport to the 2nd stop Kowloon station.

Take the escalators going up and you are walking through the mall at that point and look for the W hotel signs. Pretty easy and convenient.

If you want to go to HK Island you can take the Tung Chung line (MTR) from the Kowloon station to the island and all the stops they have on that line.

I can't recall anytime in modern history when a hotel under construction hit it's target opening date. I wouldn't book your reservations just yet...

They do but it is a SOFT opening and then a couple months later or so after getting all the kinks worked out it is officially announced.

Also there are those that go months/years into the abyss as well for many reasons.

Agree 100%. Even with a soft opening. 6-12 months seems standard once an opening date has actually been confirmed.
