A similar thing happened many years ago with the Intercontinental in Milan which was advertised as "opening soon" for years, then finally opened as a private NON affiliated chain hotel.

Hope not, that will be a shame ……. Marriott Bonvoy desperately need a 5 star property in Milan (Bulgari is not a Bonvoy hotel and Excelsior frankly is in the wrong neighborhood).

I could be wrong, but I believe the building that was meant to be the InterContinental Milan Grand Hotel Duomo (formerly the Grand Hotel Duomo), which was announced in 2007, ended up sitting vacant for years, before being turned into an H&M.

There's a new hotel in another adjacent building, further west, also facing the Piazza Duomo, called the Glamore Milano Duomo Hotel.
