Less than wonderful staff!

Just stayed one night here. Was given Top(club)floor d/d.
SPG desk not manned at 8:30-no sweat as I just beat a group of airline personel.
No water in room.I really hate having to hassle with little things like waiting for housekeeping to bring me something that should be in the room anyway.
Went to the desk to ask for shave gel and toothpaste. This is an airport property-I am on the club floor, there should be toothpaste and shave gel in the room already IMO-desk clerk ,whose grasp of english was not good, looks in 1 drawer and says,no I do not have any!No "Just a moment while I find you some" no "sorry-I will have some sent up to your room"she just looked at me.
Another desk clerk overheard this and said he would have a travel pack brought up to the room,it never arrived.Called HK in the AM and asked again-delivered this time.
My rate included a coffee and a pastry from the coffee cart.It said so in the printout .I was not given the chit which is needed for this at checkin.I went to get one from the clerk at the spg stand,he said"I am sorry but you are staying on a AAA rate and that does not qualify"told him it was on my printout(which I had left in my room :( and the fella is arguing with me over a damned coffee and pastry
Letters will be written.

I would not recommend walking back to the hotel after dark from any of the rental car locations.

Interesting question....

After my first (and so far, only) stay at this hotel in late June, I was wondering why so many seem to dislike it so much......

I was able to check in at the special Gold/Plat area and received my voucher for a pastry and beverage from the "Coffee Cart" (FWIW, I had a bottle of juice and a very good sticky bun the next morning :) ).

If anything.......my only gripe is that I wasn't told about the free internet terminals located in the SPG lounge and the lobby check-in area (I paid for the use of one of the others :( ) until after I went back to the lobby desk to ask about lounge access since I had booked an "executive level" room that supposedly included "executive lounge benefits".

When I asked, there seemed to have been some confusion about it...and I was ultimately told there was only the "SPG lounge" that is available for use by Golds and Platinums....which only had 2 PCs and a printer for use... as well as coffee in the morning.

So much for my assumption of what "executive lounge benefits" (as stated in my reservation confirmation) actually referred to.....

Other than the "lounge" issue, it was an "okay" stay....

All of the staff members that I interracted with were quite pleasant to deal with.

I was staying there to take advantage of the spg 1,500 point bonus points-looks like I might get a few more now :D

I am really baffled as to how anyone who reads FT stays at this property, Driving by it makes me cringe with the heebiejeebies

The property itself is(at least physically)very nice.MY room was spacious and nicely decorated. The public areas are beautiful and dramatic.
The staff just does not get it however. The housekeeping is below par for such a property(my room was dusty and the beautiful woodwork needed a good wiping down-mant fingerprints and water stains, the walls had many scuff marks, the elavators had hand prints on the outside doors and on the mirrors inside)and the staff,,,,well see my post above.
Could be a very good property with better management.

I stayed 2 weeks ago. There was live music playing in the lobby so you could not hear the folks at the front desk. The SPG checking area is great when there is someone there. Had to wait 10 minutes for someone to come over. The other line was very long so it didn't pay to go over there. When I got to the room the coffee machine looked like it had exploded, the cups were dirty and the bathroom glasses were filthy.
On the other hand I was able to sleep a little later for my 7am flight! Next time I may try the Sheraton and see what that is like.

Perhaps off-topic for the SPG forum but the LAX hilton lets you return Hertz cars right in the actual hotel. You go into the parking lot like normal, park the car in a hertz space, and take the hotel shuttle the next morning. Saves an entire step... it's my go-to for an early flight out of LA when I'm there.

Thrifty is next door to the Westin ... It would make sense to rent from them if you want to return the car early and walk back to the hotel.

Alternatively, Budget is across the road from the Four Points

I've never had a bad stay at LAX Westin. One problem is that I find the other two SPG hotels superior. My first stay at Sheraton was about a year ago and it has become my favorite. Four Points used to treat regular customers so good that I almost felt badly staying elsewhere.

Agree that anyone reading this forum would have stayed away from Westin.

Tried Thrify a few years ago because it was next door. Once was enough. Taking shuttle to airport, then Avis shuttle, would be quicker than standing in line at Thrifty.

Agree. I was very satisfied with my room, particularly at the priceline rate of $65/night. And the airport shuttle was convenient, if not particularly quick. We might have been upset, however, if we had arrived after the large group that was dealing with the only front desk clerk.

IMO this property is great for a one night stay, particularly of the late evening checkin early morning checkout variety.

I agree about the four points, it is my hotel of choice at LAX, especailly travelling on Govt Per Diem (free breakfast and two free cocktails). With Budget across teh road it is very convenient, especailly as a Budget fastbreak member. No standing in line, you go straight to the car.

The three times I have used Thrifty at LAX (when they are much cheaper than budget) I have not had to wait in any line. However, they are probably cheaper those times becuase they had not rented many cars ... hence no lines waiting to get a car!

Amen to that! There is not even a SPG line...Rather, one line fits all. Also, the desk staff is hit or miss...Most of the time miss for me. This property is at the bottom of my list for LAX area properties. I like Sheraton Gateway much better...Nearly upgraded 99% of the time, so-so lounge, but very courteous staff...Especially at the front desk!

A perfect description of this hotel. It could be so much better -- but it isn't. And at least 2 GM's have tried (and failed) to make it better (though I suppose it is a lot better now than it was 4 years ago). The terrace suites with the Jacuzzi outside are fabulous (but again the furniture is run-down). It looks like they are saving up for a major rebuild of this property (ala the 4 Points) in a few years, and running it into the ground in the interim.

Rather important as the LAX budget queue tends to be an hour or 2 for renting cars. Fastbreak works well and is a great service. The Sheraton is also walking distance to Budget (a block away).
