Danang Marriott Resort & Spa, Vietnam [Master Thread]

Has anyone stayed here?

Appears to be a new property (formerly known as Vinpearl Danang). Reviews seem to range from great to dreadful.

Was very, very popular with Korean tourists as Vinpearl.

My wife and I are trying to decide between this hotel and the Hyatt Regency resort. They are quite close to each other, and the prices are similar. We'll be staying for seven nights, so the current Bonvoy double nights credit promotion makes the Marriott attractive. However: (1) I can find nothing on the Marriott website about an executive lounge. Does anyone know if there is one? Or, if not, whether Titanium guests are offered anything in lieu of the lounge? I know we will get breakfast as an amenity option, but if there is no lounge I wonder whether there is a food and beverage credit, complimentary happy hour, or anything else in lieu of the evening cocktail/hors d'oeuvre offering in Marriotts with lounges. (2) Since Bonvoy only gives us ten one-night suite upgrades to last until the end of this year, we will not be using seven of them for this stay. Does anyone know whether a Titanium guest might be upgraded from the least expensive available room to a reasonably spacious room on a high floor with an ocean view? (3) If we stay here, will our experience be dominated by tour groups? (4) Anything else we should know?

Thanks so much for any thoughts or (especially) information you might be able to share.

I was considering both hotels for a short 2 night stay past November but ended up with staying at Hyatt Regency, where we were upgraded to a large ocean-view suite. Hyatt lounge was excellent and so were the resort facilities. I would love to come back. Note that Hyatt also runs a promo right now.
In Viet nam several Vinpearl properties were recently rebranded to Marriott. On the same trip I stayed in Sheraton Can Tho which still had Vinpearl on their room keys and even AmEx did not recognize the hotel as Marriott property (hence, no bonus points when charged to the branded AmEx). In Can Tho we were not upgraded to a suite - just a room with a river view - and the lounge was a small seating area next to the bar in the hotel lobby. We were also told that the lounge is under a renovation and will be open sometime in the future. Hotel hardware was fine especially when considering the price we paid for the room. I expect something similar in Da Nang.
From what I remember, none of the Marriott properties in Da Nang had lounges before the pandemic. Perhaps, you can call the hotel and simply ask about the lounge if it is important? Note that all food we tried in Da Nang was great and inexpensive.

I sent my inquiries to the email address kindly provided by Lurker Abbey. The answers were about what I expected:
  1. Does the hotel have an executive lounge? If so, can you briefly describe the opening hours and the amenities offered at the lounge?
A: The lounge is not available in our property.

2. If there is no lounge, are there offerings for Bonvoy elite guests (in my case Titanium) in lieu of the lounge, such as a complimentary evening happy hour or food and beverage credit?

A: Only Elite Welcome Gift is available for Titanium guest upon check-in. Our Front Desk Team will assist you accordingly.

3. In addition to the two questions above, can you briefly describe what a Titanium member might expect during a stay at the hotel?

A. Besides the welcome gift, you will enjoy some benefits for Titanium such as room upgrade, late check-out,…Please rest assured that Front Desk team has been alerted giving the best care for your stay.

Completing a 3 night stay as a Platinum. This is a good option if you like being in a laid back beach front resort setting.

Was given a upgrade at check in from the originally booked Deluxe king room to their Premium Ocean suite which is more like a spacious 70m2 corner king room with a separate seating area in the balcony. For Platinums and above, It was an easy choice between free welcome drink, points or daily choice as a welcome benefit. As reported previously, there is no lounge in the premises. All guests enjoy a generous 2 for 1 drinks at happy hour from 4 - 6pm at the beach/pool bar or 5 - 7pm at the hotel bar.

Balcony seating

Premium corner "suite"

Beachfront happy hour from 4 to 6pm daily

The food options here other than breakfast are quite limited. Dinner was essentially the room service menu. It is a 10 mins walk to lunch at the local restaurants around Marble Mountain. Otherwise, you are looking into a Grab into Danang or Hoi An for dinner.

Looks a lot like Hawaii.

10 min Grab from Danang, is that a good or bad location?

It is between Danang and Hoi An, more like 20-30 mins either way. Given the hot mess that is Hoi An old town right now, the beach front restaurants and cafes in Danang are a relief.

What’s going down in Hoi An right now?

The crowds are back. Tour buses, selfie sticks jostling for photo spots on that bridge built by some Japanese merchants years ago. Expect long queues for your banh mi. This is not the charming and rustic old town recognised by Unesco.

And that was during the day. We didn't linger to join the hordes hustling to take a photo of the lanterns.

Off topic but Hoi An had got like this before the plague. The place repelled me when we had a family holiday there in 2018. It, along with Sapa, demonstrated to me how an otherwise great country like Vietnam has totally squandered and mismanaged its most famous tourism infrastructure. Thankfully I'd already visited both Hoi An and Sapa when they were, respectively, a rustic old town and an isolated mountain village about 30 years ago.

Back to the Marriott...
