Extending an award reservation in progress

I’m currently on the last night of an eight night award stay and want to extend my stay for three more nights (so 11 total), which it seems should trigger a second Fifth Night Free. However, two reps with Bonvoy Reservations have said they don’t have the ability to change a stay in progress and would have to charge me the full rate for all three nights, but that the hotel might be able to do it by calling Partner Support; one front desk person told me to call Bonvoy, and another told me he doesn’t know how to do anything with award stays and I should talk to his manager in the morning. Is what I’m asking for possible, or am I just wasting a bunch of people’s time (including my own)?

Tough one. I'm inclined to think that you're stuck paying the 3 nights as it is truly a new reservation.

If you were earlier in the trip, I would have recommended dropping the last nights and then booking a separate stay that incurred the free night and the have the hotel link the two.

However, for all we know, the hotel might have an early departure fee policy (often $25-75 in USA mid-range convention type properties IME).

OP needs to reach the GM or perhaps a front desk manager or similar person (depending somewhat on the size of the hotel) and ask for what would be considered a favor. However, eleven nights now is not insignificant for the hotel, so this isn't a big ask.

BTW, when an elite uses a fifth night free award stay, I don't know whether the hotel is paid for the fifth night according to the usual formula or whether it's a free gift from the hotel rather than from Bonvoy. Does anyone know how this is handles?

ah yeah, that would have been wise. Unfortunately I didn’t decide to extend our trip until Friday which was already past that point

True. That said, it probably still would work out cheaper, assuming this is a higher cat hotel.

I believe that Bonvoy compensates the hotel for it at a negotiated rate. It's the same as the other point nights.
